Congress-BJP Political Rivalry Takes Territorial Turn in Indore Over Civic Issues

Two days after clashes and alleged stone-pelting incidents during a 'shirtless protest' at a venue showcasing India's AI aspirations, the political rivalry between the Congress and the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) escalated sharply in Indore on Monday. The conflict took a territorial dimension as the Congress staged a protest at the Bilawali Zone 13 office, accusing the BJP-led Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) of "deliberate negligence" in providing basic amenities to colonies named after senior Congress leaders.

Allegations of Identity-Based Harassment and Civic Failures

Led by the party's city president and leader of opposition in the IMC, Chintu Choukse, Congress workers surrounded the zonal office, raising slogans against the corporation. They brought charges of "identity-based harassment" against the civic body, claiming the BJP has extended its political bitterness to residents of Sonia Gandhi Nagar and Rahul Gandhi Nagar. This protest followed earlier demonstrations against the civic board over deaths linked to sewage contamination of groundwater in Bhagirathpura.

In explosive allegations, Choukse stated, "The BJP's hatred is no longer limited to the party; they are now targeting innocent citizens." He detailed specific grievances:

  • In Sonia Gandhi Nagar, drinking water pipelines were allegedly laid inside open drains.
  • Streets in Rahul Gandhi Nagar are perpetually submerged in sewage water.
  • Congress protesters also cited civic failures in neighbouring areas, including overflowing sewage on Bhim Nagar roads and garbage pile-up in Martand Nagar.
  • Additional issues raised included stalled road and chamber construction in Bhavna Nagar, broken chambers in Limbodi, and non-functional streetlights in various pockets, posing security risks.

Mayor's Dismissal and Counterclaims

Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava dismissed the allegations as "baseless and politically motivated," asserting, "The Congress is mentally bankrupt." He countered the bias charge by citing the relocation of residents from CP Shekhar Nagar, named after a Congress veteran, to modern Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) flats.

Bhargava emphasized, "The IMC serves every citizen without bias, regardless of his or her political leaning. We have identified sites for all necessary water and sewage projects across the city under AMRUT 2.0, and work will commence shortly." This reference to the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation highlights ongoing civic development efforts.

Congress Ultimatum and Resident Anxiety

Undeterred by the Mayor's dismissive response, the Congress issued an ultimatum to the IMC: fix the pipelines and sewage systems in the 'Gandhi' colonies immediately, or face a larger, citywide agitation. With the blame game intensifying, residents of wards 74-78, which encompass the affected colonies, are spending anxious days awaiting a permanent solution to their daily civic nightmares.

The situation underscores how local civic issues have become a flashpoint in the broader political rivalry, with residents caught in the crossfire. As both parties trade accusations, the need for swift action to address genuine infrastructure problems remains critical to prevent further escalation and ensure public welfare in Indore.
