In a landmark move aimed at bolstering gender inclusion in emergency services, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Saturday that the state government will induct women into the fire services. The announcement was made during the 63rd Raising Day function of the Home Guards and Civil Defence held at Sarogheen in Shimla.
A Vision for Empowerment and Systemic Change
Chief Minister Sukhu emphasised that women empowerment is a central pillar of the state government's overarching vision of 'Vyavastha Parivartan' or systemic transformation. To facilitate the entry of women into the firefighting force, the government will soon implement amendments to the existing recruitment rules. This progressive step marks a significant shift in the traditionally male-dominated field.
Alongside this, Sukhu declared that the process for recruiting new personnel into the Home Guards would also commence shortly. In a supportive measure for women already serving, he announced that women home guards will benefit from extended maternity leave, ensuring greater job security and support for working mothers.
Substantial Investments in Safety and Modernisation
The Chief Minister outlined a series of substantial investments and achievements underscoring the government's commitment to modernising disaster response infrastructure. He revealed that Rs 55 crore has been allocated under the fire services modernisation scheme.
Highlighting recent expansions, Sukhu stated that four new fire stations have become operational at Deha, Ubadesh, Nerwa, and Indora. The department's capabilities have been further enhanced with the addition of 27 new fire tenders and 150 newly sanctioned posts.
For the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), advanced equipment worth Rs 6 crore has been procured. This new kit includes modern drones intended for improved disaster monitoring and conducting efficient search-and-rescue operations in difficult terrain.
Record of Service and Public Outreach
Commending the personnel, CM Sukhu shared impressive statistics from the past year. The combined efforts of the home guards and fire services have been crucial in emergency situations, having conducted 708 search-and-rescue operations. These missions resulted in saving 448 lives and protecting property worth an estimated Rs 2,000 crore.
Their work extended beyond emergencies to public utility, with the restoration of 1,035 water sources and bodies. Furthermore, the departments have been proactive in preparedness and awareness, conducting nearly 11,000 mock drills and 3,000 awareness camps, which have trained approximately 2 lakh citizens across the state.
During the event, Sukhu also launched the 'Miracle of Mind' mobile application, developed in collaboration with the Isha Foundation, as a tool to combat drug abuse in the state. The function included a 'Safe Himachal' demonstration featuring live fire-fighting and search-and-rescue drills, and outstanding personnel were felicitated for their exemplary service.
