In a remarkable act of philanthropy, senior Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader and former minister T Harish Rao has once again demonstrated his commitment to public welfare by mortgaging his own house to secure an education loan for a struggling medical student.
A Tailor's Dream and a Financial Hurdle
The beneficiary of this generous act is Mamatha, the daughter of Konk Ramachandram, a tailor from Siddipet. Mamatha had already completed her MBBS free of cost at Siddhartha Medical College in Vijayawada. She then secured a postgraduate seat in Ophthalmology at SVS Medical College in Mahabubnagar under the government convener quota.
However, the dream of becoming an eye specialist hit a major financial roadblock. The annual tuition fee for the three-year course was a substantial ₹7.5 lakh, an amount completely unaffordable for her father. When Ramachandram approached a bank for an education loan, he was asked to provide property as collateral—something he did not possess.
Turning to a Trusted Leader for Help
Faced with this crisis, Ramachandram recalled that Harish Rao had provided financial assistance years earlier when his daughters had secured their MBBS seats. With no other options, he reached out to the senior political leader once again.
Harish Rao responded with immediate and decisive action. He stepped forward and mortgaged his own house to act as collateral for the bank. This gesture enabled the sanction of an education loan of ₹20 lakh to cover the three-year course fees, allowing Mamatha to retain her precious medical seat.
Going above and beyond, Harish Rao also personally paid her hostel fee of ₹1 lakh, ensuring she could focus entirely on her studies without further financial worry.
Not the First Time: A Pattern of Generosity
This is not an isolated incident for the BRS leader from Siddipet. His commitment to leveraging personal assets for public good has been demonstrated before.
Three years ago, Harish Rao had taken a similar step by mortgaging his house to secure a bank loan aimed at the welfare of auto-rickshaw workers in his Siddipet constituency. This latest act reinforces a consistent pattern of using his personal resources to support constituents in times of critical need.
The story highlights a rare blend of political leadership and personal sacrifice, setting a notable example in public life where a leader's assets are directly used to uplift citizens, particularly in the crucial field of education and healthcare.
