Goa Toddy Tappers Association Registration Renewed, Ending Decades-Long Dispute
The long-standing and contentious dispute within Goa's toddy tappers community over the issuance of caste certificates has reached a pivotal resolution. The registration of the All Goa Toddy Tappers Employees Association, which had lapsed for several decades, has been officially renewed following comprehensive legal proceedings. This development marks a significant milestone in addressing the deep-seated controversies that have divided the community for years.
Legal Renewal Valid Until 2030
Mario Coutinho, who represented a group of toddy tappers in this critical matter, confirmed to reporters that the association's registration will remain valid until the year 2030. He expressed optimism that this renewal will finally put to rest the prolonged controversy that has plagued the community. "Elections to elect a new committee will be held shortly," Coutinho added, highlighting the next steps toward restoring unity and governance within the association.
Roots of the Dispute in OBC Recognition
The dispute traces its origins to the community's recognition under the state's Other Backward Classes (OBC) list. The Goa government had officially notified Christian toddy tappers, locally known as renders, for inclusion in the state OBC list. Government authorities traditionally rely on recommendations from registered toddy tappers associations when issuing caste certificates to members of the community, making the association's status crucial for legal and social validation.
Allegations of Forged Certificates and Community Division
In recent times, serious allegations emerged regarding the use of forged and fake certificates issued by the Association to obtain caste certificates.
