Commuters in Thane and Mumbai should brace for significant traffic disruptions this Sunday as a major arterial road undergoes critical repair work. The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has announced a 24-hour maintenance operation on Ghodbunder Road, a crucial connector between the Eastern and Western Express Highways.
Repair Schedule and Immediate Impact
The repair work is scheduled for the entire day on Sunday. The specific stretch affected is between Fountain Hotel and Kajupada. In response, the Thane Traffic Police have imposed a complete ban on the movement of heavy vehicles along this corridor for the duration of the work. While light vehicles will be permitted to pass, they will have to use the opposite lane to safely bypass the construction site.
Authorities are strongly urging all travelers, especially local residents and daily commuters, to plan their journeys in advance. Recommendations include allowing for extra travel time, avoiding peak hours if possible, and most importantly, using alternate routes to circumvent the expected congestion.
Detailed Traffic Diversion Plan
To manage the flow of traffic, the police have outlined a comprehensive diversion plan. Vehicles originating from Mumbai and Thane and heading towards Ghodbunder will face entry restrictions at two key junctions: Majivada VY Junction and Kapurbawdi Chowk. These vehicles will be redirected via alternative paths passing through Kharegaon toll naka, Mankoli, Anjur Phata, or Kasheli.
For heavy vehicles coming from Mumbai via the Mumbra Bypass on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway, restrictions will be enforced at the Kharegaon toll naka. They will be rerouted along Kharegaon toll naka, Mankoli, and then onto Anjur Phata.
Similarly, traffic approaching from Nashik towards Ghodbunder will be stopped at Mankoli. These vehicles will be directed to use the Mankoli underbridge to join the Anjur Phata route.
Advice for Motorists and Commuters
While light vehicles have been granted passage through the repair zone using the opposite lane, motorists are cautioned to exercise extreme care and follow all instructions from traffic police personnel on duty. The contraflow system is likely to slow down movement significantly, and adherence to rules is vital for safety.
The overarching message from the Thane Traffic Police and MBMC is clear: to avoid long delays and frustration, the public should proactively seek alternate routes. This preventive planning is expected to ease pressure on the diversion routes and ensure a smoother flow of traffic across the region during this essential infrastructure maintenance period.
