Chennai Civic Body Removes 7 Illegal Banners on NSC Bose Road
GCC removes illegal banners blocking Chennai walkway

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) took decisive action on Friday, removing seven large illegal banners that had been erected by advocates' associations along the busy NSC Bose Road. This move came in direct response to reports highlighting how these structures were obstructing access to the pedestrian walkway, creating significant inconvenience for the public.

Banners Block Pedestrian Pathways

The banners, which were reportedly tied in a precarious manner to pavement gaps, walls, and shops, were ostensibly put up to convey New Year and Pongal greetings. However, sources indicate their primary purpose was to promote candidates contesting in the upcoming advocates' association elections. Following their removal, the corporation stored most of the banners near the court premises.

Residents and Advocates Demand Enforcement

Senior advocate Sudha Ramalingam strongly criticized the practice, emphasizing that the law must apply equally to all. She pointed out that the pavements were already encroached upon, and such banners further worsened the situation, leaving no space for people to walk. Residents like R Ramesh from Old Washermenpet have called for stricter enforcement, noting that NSC Bose Road is officially a non-vending zone. Yet, the stretch from Parrys Corner to Flower Bazaar remains occupied by vendors, primarily selling fruits and flowers, who operate directly beneath signs declaring the area a non-vending zone.

Civic Authority's Stance on Violations

Deputy Mayor Mahesh Kumar clarified the GCC's position, stating that the corporation does not grant permission for putting up such banners. He explained that individuals or groups seeking to display banners must obtain permission from the district collector. Kumar issued a warning, stating that the GCC would act on complaints received through the Namma Chennai app. The civic body will not only remove unauthorized banners but also impose fines on the violators. This action underscores the ongoing struggle to reclaim public spaces in Chennai from illegal encroachments and maintain order on the city's streets.
