Fuel Stations Run Dry in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Amid Panic Buying Frenzy
On Tuesday, numerous fuel stations across Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city experienced severe shortages, with many running completely dry. This crisis was triggered by widespread panic buying among motorists, who rushed to refill their tanks amid unverified rumors circulating on social media. These claims suggested that India's fuel reserves were critically low, allegedly due to the ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
Social Media Rumors Spark Early Morning Queues
Residents began queuing up at petrol pumps from the early hours of Tuesday, responding to viral posts that falsely indicated the country had only a few days' worth of fuel stock. By afternoon, the situation had escalated significantly. Several outlets either exhausted their petrol and diesel supplies entirely or were forced to ration fuel to manage the overwhelming rush. The following day, on Wednesday, many fuel stations displayed boards reading 'No Stock,' highlighting the severity of the disruption.
Traffic Chaos and Regional Impact
At stations where fuel was still available, serpentine queues of two-wheelers, cars, and commercial vehicles spilled onto main roads, leading to major traffic snarls across the city. The situation extended beyond Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, affecting parts of the Marathwada region as well. In response, district administrations issued public appeals, urging citizens to avoid panic buying and remain calm.
Official Reassurances and Supply Chain Disruptions
Aqeel Abbas, president of the Aurangabad Petrol Pump Dealers' Association based in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, addressed the media to dispel fears. He emphasized that there is adequate fuel stock in the country and attributed the current shortages solely to panic buying. "There is no cause for alarm. The current situation has arisen purely because of panic buying. We appeal to people to remain calm and avoid unnecessary refuelling," Abbas stated.
Dealers explained that the fuel supply system operates on a scheduled replenishment model, based on routine demand patterns. The unexpected spike in consumption within a few hours disrupted this cycle. Additionally, a public holiday contributed to the issue, as fuel depots did not operate, causing temporary outages at some outlets.
No Official Disruption in Fuel Imports
Industry sources confirmed that there has been no official advisory from oil marketing companies indicating any disruption in fuel imports or domestic refining. They maintained that India maintains sufficient buffer stocks and has diversified sourcing arrangements to meet demand requirements, ensuring long-term supply stability.
Traffic Management and Normalcy Restoration
To manage the chaos, traffic police personnel were deployed near crowded pumps to regulate vehicular movement and prevent potential law and order issues. Authorities also appealed to residents to rely only on verified information and refrain from forwarding unsubstantiated messages on social media.
By late evening on Wednesday, a few pumps began receiving limited supplies, while others awaited tanker deliveries expected overnight. Abbas reassured the public that fresh orders had been placed and supply tankers were en route. "Fuel stations that ran dry will start functioning normally by Thursday morning once replenishment is completed," he added, expressing confidence that normalcy would be restored across the city by Thursday.
