Four Critically Injured in Bhogi Firecracker Blast in Rayagada

A powerful firecracker explosion during Bhogi rituals in Rayagada's Yedusahi locality left four persons with critical burn injuries early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred around 3 am as youths celebrated Bhogi, a traditional ritual marking Makar Sankranti.

Blast Details and Immediate Impact

Eyewitnesses reported that a large quantity of firecrackers was thrown into a bonfire, triggering a high-intensity explosion. The blast shook the entire area, spreading panic among residents. It was so powerful that it damaged nearby structures and cracked doors and windows of houses.

The impact shattered the glass of a parked auto-rickshaw and scattered debris across the site. Frightened residents rushed out of their homes in fear, adding to the chaos of the early morning hours.

Rescue and Medical Response

Local residents immediately sprang into action, rescuing the injured and rushing them to the district headquarters hospital. However, due to the critical nature of their burn injuries, all four victims were later shifted to Visakhapatnam for advanced medical treatment.

Police and fire services reached the spot promptly after being informed about the incident. Their quick response helped secure the area and begin preliminary investigations.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the blast. Prasanna Behera, IIC of Rayagada police station, stated that several aspects are being examined.

"Whether the firecrackers were illegally manufactured or stored, and how the incident took place, is under investigation," Behera explained. The investigation aims to uncover whether safety protocols were followed during the Bhogi celebrations.

The incident has raised concerns about firecracker safety during traditional festivals, particularly when large quantities are involved in celebratory rituals.
