Tragic Electrocution Claims Farmer's Life in Gurgaon Wheat Field
A devastating incident unfolded in Gurgaon on Thursday when a 40-year-old farmer lost his life due to electrocution while working in his wheat field. The tragedy occurred in Tirpari village, highlighting severe safety lapses in agricultural infrastructure.
Details of the Fatal Accident
According to police reports, the victim, Surender Kumar, was irrigating his field with his nephew Rahul around 2 PM. They were using an aluminium sprinkler system to water the crops. While shifting the pipe to a different location, it accidentally came into contact with a low-hanging 11,000-volt power line, resulting in Kumar's immediate electrocution.
Kumar, a resident of Tirpari, cultivated approximately 6.5 acres of agricultural land on a sharecropping basis. The land belonged to Omkar from Jhund Sarai village, adding a layer of complexity to the farming arrangement.
Rescue Efforts and Hospitalization
A local villager named Keshav, who was passing by in his car, witnessed the incident and stopped to assist. He helped transport Kumar to SGT Hospital in Budhera. Despite prompt medical attention, doctors at the hospital declared Kumar dead upon arrival, confirming the severity of the electrical shock.
Allegations of Negligence and Police Action
In a formal complaint filed by Rahul, it was alleged that the electricity department had been repeatedly informed about the dangerously low-hanging power lines above the field. However, no corrective action was taken, leading to this preventable tragedy.
Police authorities reached the hospital after receiving information about the death and subsequently shifted the body to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Based on the complaint and initial enquiry, a case has been registered under Section 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Farukhnagar police station.
Sub-inspector Devender Kumar stated, "The body was taken to the mortuary and handed over to the victim's family members after the post-mortem. Further investigation is underway." This indicates that authorities are actively probing the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine liability and ensure justice.
Broader Implications for Agricultural Safety
This incident underscores critical issues in rural safety and infrastructure maintenance. Key points include:
- Infrastructure Neglect: The failure to address low-hanging power lines poses a persistent threat to farmers and agricultural workers.
- Legal Accountability: The registration of a negligence case highlights potential legal repercussions for responsible parties.
- Community Impact: Such accidents devastate families and communities, emphasizing the need for proactive safety measures.
As investigations continue, this case serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved electrical safety standards in agricultural areas to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
