Former MLA and Farmers' Leader Shankaranna Dhondge Officially Joins Shiv Sena

In a significant political development, former MLA from Loha in Nanded district, Shankaranna Dhondge, widely recognized as a prominent farmers' leader, has formally joined the Shiv Sena. The 66-year-old leader made this move on Monday in Mumbai, in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, marking a notable shift in Maharashtra's political landscape.

Dhondge's Political Journey and Search for Leadership

Dhondge's political career has seen several transitions. He previously aligned with the Telangana-based Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), led by former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), where he played a key role in establishing the party's presence in parts of Marathwada. Following the decline of BRS, Dhondge founded the Maharashtra Rajya Samiti (MRS) as an independent entity.

In his quest to rejoin a well-established political party, Dhondge ultimately chose the ruling Shiv Sena. During the joining ceremony, he expressed his admiration for Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, stating, "I am searching for another KCR in Shinde's leadership." He elaborated that Shinde's recent declaration that farmers have the first right over the exchequer resonated deeply, drawing parallels to KCR's pro-farmer initiatives.

Pro-Farmer Stance and Future Plans

Dhondge emphasized that under Shinde's leadership, Maharashtra could potentially overcome the crisis of farmers' suicides. "We are searching for another KCR in him. Under his leadership only, our state can become free from farmers' suicides," he asserted. To solidify this alliance, Dhondge announced plans to organize a large-scale farmers' convention, aimed at facilitating their formal entry into the Shiv Sena and bolstering the party's grassroots support.

In response, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde praised Dhondge's lifelong dedication to the farmers' movement. "He experienced the pain and problems of farmers first-hand. The organisational strength he built in Marathwada is great," Shinde remarked. He also hinted at imminent policy decisions, noting that a decision on a loan waiver for Maharashtra's farmers would be taken soon, underscoring the government's commitment to agricultural welfare.

Strategic Considerations and Grassroots Connect

Known for his strong grassroots connections, Dhondge had earlier explored other political options, including meetings with senior Congress leaders. However, the majority of his supporters advocated for joining the ruling party, influencing his final decision to align with Shiv Sena. This move is expected to enhance the party's outreach in Marathwada and among farming communities, leveraging Dhondge's established network and credibility.

The joining of Dhondge to Shiv Sena not only strengthens the party's farmer-centric agenda but also reflects the ongoing realignments in Maharashtra politics, as leaders seek platforms that align with their advocacy for agricultural issues.
