Ex-Maharashtra BJP Minister Raj Purohit Passes Away at 71

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Maharashtra minister Raj K Purohit has passed away. He was 71 years old. Purohit died following an illness at a private hospital in Mumbai on Saturday, according to party sources.

A Long Political Career in Mumbai

Raj Purohit was a well-known figure in Mumbai's political circles. He served as the BJP's city president for Mumbai. He also held the position of minister in the Maharashtra state government. Between 2014 and 2019, Purohit acted as the BJP's chief whip in the state legislative assembly.

He was once considered one of the most influential leaders within the BJP's Mumbai unit. Purohit wielded significant political clout, particularly in south Mumbai areas. The party denied him a ticket during the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections.

Tributes from Party Colleagues

BJP national general secretary Vinod Tawde expressed deep sorrow upon learning of Purohit's demise. Tawde described Purohit as a close friend and popular public representative.

"From a Mumbai municipal corporator to an MLA and a minister in the Maharashtra assembly, my friend Raj Purohit was a popular public representative deeply connected with the people," Tawde wrote in a social media post.

Tawde highlighted Purohit's work for migrant communities in Mumbai. He noted that Purohit was regarded as the biggest champion for migrant tenants living in the city. Purohit dedicated his life to working for their upliftment and welfare.

"His demise is an irreparable loss for the BJP in Maharashtra and for me personally," Tawde added. He offered prayers for peace for the departed soul and strength for the bereaved family.

Family Political Legacy Continues

In the recently concluded Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, Raj Purohit's son achieved electoral success. Akash Purohit, also a BJP leader, won from ward number 221. This victory comes during a difficult period for the family.

Party leaders acknowledged Purohit's passing leaves a void in Maharashtra's political and social landscape. They described him as an experienced and erudite leader with deep grassroots connections.

Final Homage Arrangements

The mortal remains of Raj Purohit will be kept for public homage at Rajhans Building on Marine Drive in Mumbai. The viewing will take place on Sunday from 11 am to 1 pm, according to party sources.

Raj Purohit's death marks the end of a political career spanning several decades. He remained a significant voice for north Indian communities within Mumbai's complex political ecosystem until his final days.
