Elderly man killed in Kannauj over land dispute, son held

Kanpur: An elderly man was brutally killed with a sharp weapon late at night while sleeping outside his house in Devpur village under the Sakrawa police station area of Kannauj district. The police have taken the victim's son, Ashok, into custody on suspicion of murder.

Victim identified

The deceased has been identified as Shrikrishna Batham (75), a resident of Devpur village. On the morning of the incident, his grandson came out of the house and found Shrikrishna lying on a cot, drenched in blood. He raised an alarm, drawing neighbors to the scene, who then informed the police.

CO Chhibramau Suresh Kumar also reached the location. A police field unit and dog squad teams visited the village, inspected the crime scene, and collected evidence by questioning family members.

Police have revealed that they suspect the victim's son, Ashok, who was known to be a drunkard. Ashok lived separately and frequently abused his father after consuming alcohol. In contrast, Ashok's son Rajnish had been taking care of his grandfather Shrikrishna and keeping him with him.

Motive behind the murder

According to police, Ashok suspected that his father would transfer his four bigha farmland to Rajnish's name, while Ashok wanted the land registered in his own name. Shrikrishna was killed after he refused to give the land to Ashok. Rajnish lodged a written complaint against his father at the local police station, stating that in a drunken state, Ashok had abused his grandfather late at night. People present at the time pacified him and sent him back. However, Ashok returned with a sharp weapon (takora) and killed his father.

The police are continuing their investigation, and further details are awaited.
