DMK Vows Legal Battle Against ED Allegations, Minister Nehru Asserts Innocence
In a strong response to recent developments, Tamil Nadu's municipal administration minister, K N Nehru, declared on Friday that the DMK government will confront the charges brought by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) through legal means and demonstrate their falsity. This statement came following the Madras High Court's directive to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) to register a case based on information provided by the ED and proceed in accordance with the law.
Transparent Inquiry Ordered by Chief Minister Stalin
Nehru emphasized that a transparent investigation is already underway, initiated in response to a letter from the ED. He revealed that Chief Minister M K Stalin has mandated a detailed probe into the matter. Speaking at a joint press conference with DMK organizational secretary R S Bharathi, Nehru confidently stated, "We did no wrong and we will establish this before the court." This assertion underscores the party's commitment to clearing its name through judicial processes.
Past Legal Victories and Current Political Context
R S Bharathi, supporting Nehru's stance, highlighted that several cases have been filed against DMK leaders in the past, including Nehru himself. He noted, "The minister fought and won all those cases. The present case will also be faced legally." Bharathi attributed the current allegations to political motivations, suggesting that Nehru is being targeted due to his appointment in charge of 41 constituencies for the upcoming assembly election. He accused political rivals of acting out of "jealousy and fear," implying that the ED is being used as a tool to undermine Nehru's public standing.
Allegations of Political Interference from Delhi
Bharathi further alleged that forces in Delhi are attempting to weaken Nehru's influence by leveraging the Enforcement Directorate. He asserted, "But the more he is targeted, the more vigorously he will function," indicating a resolve to intensify efforts in the face of adversity. This rhetoric points to a broader narrative of political rivalry and the use of central agencies in state politics, reflecting ongoing tensions between the DMK and its opponents.
The DMK's response highlights a strategic approach to legal challenges, with leaders expressing confidence in their ability to disprove allegations through court proceedings. As the investigation unfolds, this case is set to become a focal point in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, especially with elections on the horizon.
