Sanjeev Singh's Decisive Mayoral Victory Rekindles Political Legacy of Dhanbad's 'Singh Mansion'
The political landscape of Dhanbad has witnessed a significant resurgence with the triumph of Sanjeev Singh in the Dhanbad Municipal Corporation mayoral election. His victory, achieved by a commanding margin of over 31,902 votes against his nearest rival, has thrust the family residence, famously known as 'Singh Mansion', back into the political limelight. This win is widely interpreted as a symbolic revival for the Singh political dynasty, which had experienced a period of notable decline in recent years.
A Storied Residence and Its Association with Power
For decades, 'Singh Mansion' has been regarded as a central hub of political power in Dhanbad, historically linked to former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar. However, the family's influence waned considerably following a series of personal and political challenges. The most severe blow came when Sanjeev Singh was incarcerated in connection with the murder of his cousin, former deputy mayor Neeraj Singh. He endured eight years in prison before ultimately being acquitted by the court, but this lengthy legal battle severely damaged the family's political standing during his absence.
Overcoming Setbacks and Legal Hurdles
The family's political fortunes faced further adversity in the 2019 assembly elections when Sanjeev's wife, Ragini Singh, lost the Jharia seat to Congress candidate Purnima Singh, who is the widow of Neeraj Singh. A turning point emerged in 2024 when Ragini Singh, contesting on a BJP ticket, successfully reclaimed the Jharia seat by defeating Purnima. This victory set the stage for Sanjeev's own political comeback.
Following a crucial relief granted by the Supreme Court in August 2025, Sanjeev Singh was released from jail. When municipal elections were announced, he entered the race as a BJP rebel candidate, running independently without the party's official backing. In his victory speech, Singh emphasized the grassroots nature of his support, stating, "Some candidates were backed by BJP, some by Congress and some by JMM. But I was supported by the people. That is why the people made me mayor of Dhanbad." He dedicated his win to the citizens and pledged to serve them with the dedication of family.
Celebrations and Political Endorsements
Celebrations erupted across Dhanbad as enthusiastic supporters flocked to 'Singh Mansion' from the early morning hours. Several prominent political figures, including Dhanbad MLA Raj Sinha, visited the residence to personally congratulate Sanjeev on his achievement. Ragini Singh characterized the victory as a clear reflection of her husband's enduring popularity and political capability, particularly noting that he managed to secure this significant win within a remarkably short campaign period.
A Legacy of Political Service
The Singh family's deep-rooted political legacy in the region is further underscored by the service of Sanjeev's parents, Kunti Devi and Surya Dev Singh, who both served as MLAs from the Jharia constituency. This established Jharia as the family's traditional political bastion, a stronghold that Sanjeev's mayoral victory has now powerfully reaffirmed. The win not only marks a personal comeback for Sanjeev Singh but also signals the potential restoration of the Singh family's influential role in Dhanbad's governance and political future.
