In a candid assessment of the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) performance in the recent local body elections, CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam stated that the verdict should be seen as a clear warning from the electorate. Speaking at a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, Viswam acknowledged a degree of public distancing from the ruling front but asserted that its foundational strength remains intact.
A Call for Introspection and Corrective Action
Viswam revealed that the LDF had anticipated a massive victory in the polls, but the expected results did not materialize. He described this unexpected outcome as a signal demanding serious introspection. The setbacks must be carefully analysed, lessons learned, and corrective steps taken without any delay, he emphasized. The CPI leader openly admitted that the state government failed to effectively communicate its achievements and welfare initiatives to the people, which contributed to the public's distancing.
"Honest and transparent communication is the only way forward. People are the ultimate authority and the Left must proceed with this understanding," Viswam stated. He clarified that criticism voiced against the LDF leadership during internal party meetings was constructive in nature, aimed not at weakening the front but at strengthening it by rectifying mistakes.
Foundation Intact, Focus on Third Term
While maintaining that the LDF government had performed well and implemented several welfare measures, Viswam conceded that the election results indicated dissatisfaction among certain sections of the public. However, he stressed that this does not mean everything is lost. "The foundation is intact. LDF will correct its mistakes and return to power for a third term," he asserted confidently.
Viswam insisted there should be no delay in preparations for securing a third term. Identifying the precise reasons behind the people's shift is essential, and both policy-level and practical corrective actions are required. As a concrete step in this outreach process, the CPI will conduct extensive home visits across the state from January 15 to January 30.
No Compromise on Sabarimala Probe and Fanaticism
Striking a firm note on contentious issues, Viswam declared that the LDF would never compromise with religious fanaticism. He specifically targeted those allegedly involved in the Sabarimala financial irregularities. "There would be no compromise with those who looted the wealth of Sabarimala," he said, adding that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the matter must proceed without any interference and ensure the guilty are punished.
In conclusion, Viswam's analysis presents a picture of a ruling coalition that is sobered by the electoral warning but remains determined to course-correct, reconnect with the people, and fight the next political battle with renewed vigour.
