CPI(M) Leader Claims Vijay Softened BJP Stance Post-Karur Stampede
CPI(M): Vijay's Political Shift After Karur Stampede

A significant political observation was made by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Tamil Nadu on Monday, suggesting a notable shift in the rhetoric of popular actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president, Vijay. CPI(M) state secretary, P Shanmugham, claimed that Vijay has noticeably softened his political stance towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following the tragic Karur stampede incident.

A Change in Rhetoric Post-Karur

Addressing reporters in Chennai, Shanmugham pointed out a distinct pattern in Vijay's recent public addresses. He stated that after the Karur incident, Vijay has refrained from targeting the BJP in his speeches. This includes major meetings in Kancheepuram and Puducherry, as well as the party's general council meeting. "He did not speak about the ideological enemy (BJP) at all," Shanmugam emphasized, highlighting what the Left party perceives as a deliberate omission.

Possible Reasons and Alliance Implications

Shanmugham speculated on the potential reasons behind this change in tone. He suggested that Vijay's decision to avoid opposing the Union government might be linked to the fact that the Karur stampede case is currently under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This federal probe could be influencing his public statements.

When questioned about the possibility of the CPI(M) considering an alliance with Vijay's TVK for the crucial 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, Shanmugham's response was definitive. Given the current circumstances and Vijay's apparent shift, he asserted, "there is no question of keeping another option." This indicates a clear distancing from any immediate electoral partnership with the actor's party.

CPI(M)'s Firm Stance and 2026 Ambitions

Reiterating his party's unwavering position, Shanmugham confirmed that the CPI(M) remains firmly opposed to both the BJP and the AIADMK. Looking ahead to the 2026 polls, he revealed that the CPI(M) has expressed its interest in contesting a larger number of seats within the DMK-led secular alliance. This move signals the party's intent to strengthen its role and representation in the state's primary opposition front against the BJP.

The developments point to the complex and evolving political equations in Tamil Nadu, where new players like TVK are being closely watched by established parties like the CPI(M) for their ideological consistency and strategic moves ahead of the next electoral battle.
