Congress Nomination Withdrawals Spark Unopposed BJP Victories in Gujarat Local Polls
Dramatic scenes unfolded on Tuesday, the final day for withdrawal of nominations in Bharuch and Navsari districts of Gujarat, as multiple Congress candidates pulled out, leading to uncontested victories for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The developments have intensified political tensions in the region ahead of local body elections.
Uncontested Wins in Bharuch Municipality
In Ward 5 of the Bharuch municipality, Congress candidate Rajvir Vasava withdrew his nomination, leaving BJP candidate Devendra Vasava as the sole contender. With no other candidates in the fray, the BJP secured the seat unopposed without a single vote being cast.
The situation grew more contentious in Ward 4, where Congress candidate Manish Jadhav also withdrew his nomination. Tense scenes erupted at the office where the withdrawal process was being conducted. Congress leaders alleged they were barred from entering the premises during the crucial procedure, sparking an immediate uproar.
Clashes and Allegations of Irregularities
Arguments and physical scuffles broke out between Congress workers and police personnel, with party supporters raising loud slogans against the police deployment. The situation deteriorated further with allegations that individuals other than the candidate were permitted inside the office during the withdrawal process, raising questions about procedural transparency.
After considerable commotion, authorities managed to bring the situation under control. Manish Jadhav was subsequently escorted to his residence under police protection, highlighting the volatile atmosphere surrounding the nomination withdrawals.
Navsari District Developments
In Navsari district, a Congress candidate for the district panchayat from Rumla village also withdrew their nomination. Notably, Rumla is the native village of Tribal Development Minister Naresh Patel. With the seat going to the BJP unopposed, Patel and BJP workers celebrated the victory with enthusiastic dancing and music.
Within the Navsari Municipal Corporation elections, BJP candidates in Ward 8 and Ward 11 were similarly declared elected unopposed after all other candidates withdrew their nominations, further consolidating the party's position in the region.
Conflicting Claims About Uncontested Seats
Navsari district BJP members claimed the party had secured an impressive 58 seats uncontested across various local bodies including the district panchayat, taluka panchayats, municipalities, and the municipal corporation. However, political observers suggest the actual number might be lower due to counter-strategies employed by opposition parties.
Congress MLA Anant Patel reportedly moved approximately 150 candidates to an undisclosed location in an apparent attempt to prevent further withdrawals, indicating the high-stakes nature of these local elections and the strategic maneuvers being employed by both major political parties.
The series of uncontested victories has raised significant questions about the democratic process in these local elections, with opposition parties alleging pressure tactics and procedural irregularities, while the ruling party celebrates what it describes as a demonstration of its organizational strength and popular support in the region.
