The Congress party secured a decisive victory in the repoll for Ward No. 6 in Dinanagar, boosting its tally to eight out of 15 seats and ensuring it will form the next municipal house. The repoll was necessitated after an EVM malfunction halted polling on Saturday.
Election Results and Voter Turnout
Congress candidate Sneh Lata received 442 votes, while AAP candidate Raman Kumari garnered 249 votes, and BJP candidate Kulbir Kaur finished third with 139 votes. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) managed only two votes, highlighting its continued decline in the area. The winning margin was 193 votes.
Polling saw heavy turnout throughout the day. Ward No. 6 was reserved for women candidates.
Support and Allegations
Independent candidate Seema Devi extended support to the Congress candidate. Congress MLA Aruna Chaudhary attributed the victory to developmental works in the area.
Meanwhile, AAP halqa in-charge Shamsher Singh attempted to influence voters by distributing ration kits at Krishna Nagar Camp on Sunday. However, the move backfired as residents protested, leading to police intervention and his removal from the ward.
Political Implications
The Congress majority provides a significant boost ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, just months away. Party workers credited the victory to free and fair polling, with EVMs used and CCTVs installed at all polling stations.
In the previous municipal elections, Congress had swept all 15 seats.
