Congress Revives Himachal Pradesh Unit After 16-Month Dissolution
The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has officially announced the reconstitution of the Himachal Pradesh Congress, ending a 16-month period of dormancy. The state unit was originally dissolved on November 6, 2024, and the late Saturday evening announcement marks a significant organizational revival.
New Leadership and Committee Structure Unveiled
In a press statement issued by AICC national general secretary K C Venugopal, the party detailed a comprehensive new structure. This includes a 26-member political affairs committee, an eight-member disciplinary action committee, a 21-member executive committee, 27 general secretaries, and 12 vice-presidents.
The party has strategically adhered to the principle of ‘one person, one post’ by integrating fresh faces alongside experienced senior leadership. This move is seen as preparation for the scheduled panchayati raj elections in May and the forthcoming 2027 legislative assembly poll.
Key Appointments and Committee Members
The AICC replaced former MP Pratibha Singh with Shri Renukaji MLA Vinay Kumar (47) as the state Congress president in November last year. The political affairs committee is notably robust, featuring HPCC president Vinay Kumar, chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, deputy chief minister Mukesh Agnihotri, and other prominent figures such as Anand Sharma, Pratibha Singh, and Kaul Singh Thakur.
Additional key appointments include:
- Vinod Zinta as general secretary (organisation)
- Amit Nanda as vice-president (administration)
- Hari Krishan Himral as new general secretary (frontal organisation)
- Madan Chaudhary as treasurer
The 27 general secretaries encompass a diverse group, including Pawan Thakur, Anita Verma, and Vikas Thakur, among others. Similarly, the 12 vice-presidents list features Prakash Chaudhary, Neeraj Bharti, and Satpal Raizada.
Disciplinary Action Committee and Strategic Implications
The disciplinary action committee, chaired by Kuldeep Singh Rathore, includes members such as Harshwardhan Chauhan, Ashish Butail, and Vinod Zinta. This committee underscores the party’s focus on maintaining internal discipline and cohesion.
This reconstitution is a critical step for the Congress party in Himachal Pradesh, aiming to strengthen its organizational framework and electoral prospects. By balancing new talent with veteran leaders, the party seeks to rejuvenate its base and effectively contest in the upcoming local and state elections.
