Congress Leaders Stage Protest in Mussoorie Over Delayed Bridge Construction

Congress leaders in Mussoorie staged a significant protest on Sunday, blocking the Mussoorie-Dehradun road near the Bailey bridge. The demonstration was organized to accuse the state government of failing to construct a new bridge near Shiv Mandir in Mussoorie, eight months after the original structure was washed away in a devastating cloudburst on September 16.

Accusations of Government Inaction

Former Mussoorie Municipal Council chairman Anuj Gupta led the criticism, targeting cabinet minister Ganesh Joshi for what he described as "inaction" on local development. Gupta emphasized that the temporary Bailey bridge is causing severe traffic jams and posing significant inconvenience for both tourists and local residents. "The Bailey bridge is a major bottleneck, leading to long delays and safety concerns, but Ganesh Joshi has completely failed to address this urgent issue and build a new, permanent bridge," Gupta stated during the protest.

Project Report Prepared but Construction Stalled

Despite the Public Works Department (PWD) having prepared a detailed project report for the new bridge, construction has not yet commenced. This delay has fueled frustration among the community, with Congress leaders warning of further action if the government does not respond promptly.

Congress Threatens Public Funding Initiative

Congress leader Godavari Thapli issued a stern warning, declaring that the party would take matters into its own hands if the government fails to act within two months. "If the state government continues to neglect this critical infrastructure need, we will raise public funds and initiate the construction ourselves to ensure the bridge is built without further delay," Thapli announced, highlighting the party's commitment to resolving the issue.

Impact on Local Community and Tourism

The absence of a proper bridge has had a detrimental impact on daily life in Mussoorie. Key points include:

  • Increased traffic congestion on the Mussoorie-Dehradun road, affecting commuters and emergency services.
  • Disruption to tourism, a vital economic sector for the region, as visitors face delays and inconvenience.
  • Safety concerns due to the temporary nature of the Bailey bridge, which may not withstand future weather events.

The protest underscores growing discontent with the state government's handling of infrastructure projects, particularly in the wake of natural disasters like the September cloudburst. Congress leaders are demanding immediate action to alleviate the hardships faced by locals and boost the area's connectivity and economic stability.
