Congress Veteran K Babu Announces Retirement from Electoral Politics

In a significant political development, senior Congress leader and six-term Tripunithura MLA K Babu has officially announced his decision to step away from electoral politics. The veteran politician confirmed on Thursday that he will not be contesting the upcoming assembly elections, marking the end of an era for one of Kerala's most prominent Congress figures.

Formal Announcement at DCC Office

Babu made the announcement during a media interaction at the District Congress Committee (DCC) office in Kochi, where he was accompanied by party district president Mohammed Shiyas and former minister Dominic Presentation. The six-term MLA emphasized that while he is vacating his seat, the Tripunithura constituency remains a stronghold of the United Democratic Front (UDF), and he expressed unwavering confidence in the party's ability to retain it with a fresh candidate.

"The people of Tripunithura and the Congress party brought me from an ordinary man to where I am today. I am forever grateful for the immense support I received from all sections of society," Babu stated emotionally. The prominent 'A' group leader, however, stopped short of naming anyone as his official successor, leaving the question of who will carry forward his political legacy unanswered.

Succession Race Heats Up

Although Babu declined to officially name a successor, political circles are already buzzing with several high-profile names being considered for the Tripunithura seat in the upcoming polls. Among the strongest contenders is popular actor and comedian Ramesh Pisharody, who is known for his vocal support of the Congress party. Babu himself described Pisharody as "a brave artist who has consistently stood by the party's platform."

Other names rumored to be in the fray include deputy mayor Deepak Joy and DCC general secretary Raju P Nair. However, sources close to the development indicate that KPCC general secretary M Liju is Babu's preferred choice to succeed him, though no formal endorsement has been made.

Legal Challenges and Political Legacy

The announcement comes at a time when Babu, a former excise minister, is facing an Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe regarding disproportionate assets. The investigation recently led to the freezing of assets worth Rs 25.82 lakh, adding a layer of complexity to his political exit. Despite these legal challenges, Babu's decision appears to be driven by personal choice rather than external pressure.

Babu's retirement marks the end of a remarkable political journey that saw him rise from humble beginnings to become one of Kerala's most influential Congress leaders. His departure creates a significant vacuum in Tripunithura politics and sets the stage for an intense succession battle within the Congress party as they prepare for the crucial assembly elections.
