Coimbatore Locals Rally Against Proposed Tasmac Outlet in Residential Zone
In a significant display of community dissent, residents of Muthugoundenpudur, located near Sulur in Coimbatore, organized a protest on Tuesday to voice their strong opposition to the planned establishment of a new Tasmac outlet in their neighborhood. The demonstration, which saw participation from over 50 women alongside other concerned citizens, took place at the entrance of the district collectorate, with protesters demanding the immediate cancellation of the permission granted for the new FL-2 category liquor bar.
Existing Outlets and Proximity Concerns Fuel Protest
The protesters highlighted that the area already has two operational Tasmac outlets, making the addition of a third one unnecessary and potentially disruptive. Despite this, construction work for the new liquor bar is reportedly underway, with plans for it to operate from 11 am to 11 pm. Residents expressed deep concerns about the proposed site's close proximity to schools, residential houses, and places of worship, arguing that such a location violates established norms and poses risks to the community's well-being.
Previous Petitions Ignored as Construction Accelerates
According to the protesters, they had previously submitted petitions to the District Collector and officials of the Prohibition and Excise Department, urging them to reconsider the permission. However, no action has been taken on these appeals. Instead, there are reports that the construction of the new bar is being expedited, further escalating tensions among the locals.
Call for Administrative Intervention
The demonstrators have called upon the district administration to revoke the permission for the FL-2 liquor outlet immediately, citing alleged violations of rules and regulations. They emphasized that the proposed outlet's operation could lead to increased nuisance and safety issues in a densely populated area with vulnerable institutions like schools nearby.
This protest underscores the growing community resistance against the proliferation of liquor outlets in residential zones, with residents advocating for stricter enforcement of zoning laws and greater consideration for public welfare in licensing decisions.
