Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Inaugurates Renovated Vandiyur Park in Madurai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin officially inaugurated the newly renovated Vandiyur Park in Madurai on Saturday. This significant development is part of the ambitious Vandiyur Tank Beautification Project, which has been executed at a substantial cost of Rs 50 crore. The park's transformation aims to enhance recreational facilities and environmental sustainability in the region.

Expansive Park Features and Amenities

Spread along the northern and western banks of the historic Vandiyur Tank, the park now boasts an extensive array of amenities designed for visitors of all ages. Key features include a dedicated 3-kilometer walking track and a separate 3-kilometer cycling track, providing ample space for fitness enthusiasts. Two entry gates have been strategically placed to ensure convenient access for the public.

The park houses multiple facilities to promote wellness and leisure:

  • Meditation and yoga centers for relaxation and mental health
  • An open-air auditorium with a seating capacity of 300 for events and performances
  • A skating rink for sports activities
  • A children's play area with modern equipment
  • Outdoor exercise stations for physical fitness

New Boating Facility and Operational Details

A major addition to the park is the introduction of a boating facility, complete with a floating jetty. The boathouse operates daily from 10 am to 6 pm, offering 30-minute rides. Pricing is set at Rs 150 for two-seater paddle boats and Rs 300 for four-seater boats, making it an affordable recreational option for families and groups.

Infrastructure and Environmental Initiatives

To accommodate visitors, the park provides extensive parking space for 200 cars and 300 two-wheelers. Landscaping efforts have included the planting of over 16,000 flowering plants, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the premises. Comprehensive lighting has been installed throughout the park to ensure safety and usability during evening hours.

Environmental protection measures are a cornerstone of the project. A 4 MLD (Million Liters per Day) sewage treatment plant has been established to treat wastewater before it enters the Vandiyur Tank, effectively preventing pollution and preserving the waterbody's health. Additional infrastructure includes public restrooms and pedestrian bridges that connect various sections along the lake, improving accessibility and visitor experience.

The renovation of Vandiyur Park represents a significant investment in public infrastructure and environmental conservation in Madurai. With its diverse amenities and focus on sustainability, the park is poised to become a premier destination for recreation and community engagement in Tamil Nadu.
