Chennai's Nungambakkam Subway Repair Stalled Over Traffic Diversion Delays
The pothole-ridden Nungambakkam subway on Nelson Manickam Road continues to present a severe daily struggle for thousands of commuters in Chennai. Repair work worth nearly 1 crore rupees has been completely stalled due to significant delays in obtaining necessary traffic diversion approvals, according to officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation.
Critical Commuter Link in Disrepair
This crucial stretch serves as an essential link connecting several important neighborhoods including Anna Nagar, Aminjikarai, Nungambakkam, and Egmore. The subway is particularly vital for school and college students from institutions like Loyola College and Women's Christian College, while also providing critical access to multiple hospitals in the immediate locality.
With frequent ambulance movements, heavy school traffic during peak hours, and constant office commuter flow, the subway witnesses exceptionally heavy vehicular traffic throughout the entire day. The deteriorating road conditions have created significant safety hazards for all users.
Community Voices Concerns Over Safety
"This road needs immediate repair without any further delay," emphasized Vennila K, a teacher at a nearby private school. "School students traveling with their parents on two-wheelers are especially at high risk due to the dangerously uneven surface and deep potholes."
Councillor of Ward 109, Sukanya Selvam, who has personally witnessed a Greater Chennai Corporation official sustain injuries at this location, strongly agrees with these safety concerns. "Commuting through that subway has become a genuine hassle and safety hazard for everyone," she stated firmly.
Seven-Month Delay Despite Allocation
Following repeated complaints from residents and commuters, the Greater Chennai Corporation allocated approximately 1 crore rupees for comprehensive repair work nearly seven months ago. "But the actual physical work is yet to begin even after all this time," Councillor Selvam explained. "Officials consistently state they cannot undertake any repair activities without completely stopping traffic through proper diversion plans."
GCC assistant engineer Ramakrishnan provided technical details, noting that an estimate of 40 lakh rupees for work on each side of the subway was carefully prepared and tenders were officially floated. However, the traffic police department has not yet finalized or approved comprehensive plans for traffic diversion, creating an administrative impasse.
Traffic Diversion Challenges and Blame Game
Traffic police officials, on the other hand, have indicated that implementing effective traffic diversion on this particular road presents substantial difficulties due to limited alternative route options in the densely populated area. Some officials have now deflected responsibility onto ongoing election-related works, even as daily commuters continue paying the price through vehicle damage and safety risks.
"The condition of this road remains consistently poor throughout the year," said Martin G, an auto-rickshaw driver who navigates this route daily. "Roads are typically relaid and repaired during election periods, but this specific stretch has been completely neglected despite its importance to thousands of people."
Broader Infrastructure Issues in Chennai
Several other arterial roads in the Nungambakkam and Kodambakkam areas remain in similarly poor condition, with authorities often attributing these problems to ongoing metro rail construction work. "Metro work is frequently cited as an excuse to avoid addressing legitimate public complaints," Martin G continued. "But that justification cannot reasonably apply to this particular subway, which requires independent attention."
The auto driver highlighted the tangible economic impact of the poor road conditions: "My auto-rickshaw's suspension components and other parts have to be constantly replaced due to the terrible road surface. There is a significant financial cost to this ongoing inconvenience that affects my livelihood directly."
The situation underscores broader challenges in urban infrastructure maintenance and inter-departmental coordination within Chennai's municipal administration, with commuters caught in the middle of bureaucratic delays that compromise both safety and convenience.
