Chandrapur Mayoral Race: Shiv Sena (UBT) Demands Mayor Post

Chandrapur Mayoral Race Intensifies as Shiv Sena (UBT) Takes Firm Stand

Political negotiations in the Chandrapur Municipal Corporation have reached a fever pitch. The mayoral reservation draw is expected next week, and all parties are scrambling for advantage. Shiv Sena (UBT) finds itself at the center of this closely fought contest. The party has issued a clear ultimatum to potential allies. It will support only the alliance that agrees to install a Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate as mayor.

Fractured Mandate Creates Complex Scenario

The recent municipal elections delivered a fractured mandate in the 66-member corporation. Congress emerged as the single largest party with 27 seats. It enjoys the backing of its pre-poll ally, the Bharatiya Shetkari Kamgar Paksh, which won three seats. This takes the Congress-led tally to 30 seats. However, this number still falls short of the 34-seat mark required to secure control of the House.

The BJP won 23 seats in the election. It has the support of one councillor from the Shiv Sena Shinde faction, taking its strength to 24. The remaining seats are distributed among several smaller groups. Shiv Sena (UBT) holds six seats, while the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi has two. Two Independents, the BSP, and the AIMIM each hold one seat.

Key Alliance Strengthens Bargaining Power

A significant development has altered the political landscape. Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi have come together to form an eight-member bloc. This alliance significantly strengthens their bargaining power in the corporation. Both Congress and the BJP have approached Shiv Sena (UBT) seeking its support, according to reliable sources.

Shiv Sena (UBT) district chief Sandeep Girhe explained the party's firm position. He stated that the party has repeatedly compromised in power-sharing arrangements in the past. This happened despite being part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi at the state level. "We have supported our allies without seeking positions previously," Girhe said. "This time, our stand is firm. The mayor must be from Shiv Sena." He added that the party would not press hard for other posts in the corporation.

Congress Explores Alternative Paths

Congress is actively exploring alternative combinations to cross the majority mark. The party is considering support from Independents and smaller parties. However, such a route would require delicate and complex negotiations. Each small party and independent councillor holds significant leverage in this tight race.

With no clear winner yet, Chandrapur's mayoral race remains wide open. The outcome is set to hinge on a critical question. Will Shiv Sena (UBT)'s demand for the mayor post become the price of power? Political observers are watching closely as the draw for mayoral reservation approaches. The next week promises intense political maneuvering in Chandrapur.
