The Bangalore Nagarika Parishattu (BNP) has issued an open letter to Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, demanding the immediate conduct of long-pending municipal elections in Bengaluru. The party highlighted that the city has been without elected local representatives since September 2020, stressing the need for democratic accountability.
Demand for Civic Polls
In the letter, the BNP urged the state government to prioritize the civic polls, which have been delayed for over five years. The party argued that the absence of an elected council has hindered effective governance and development in Bengaluru. They called for a swift election schedule to restore local democracy.
Accountability Concerns
The BNP also raised concerns about the lack of accountability in the current administrative setup. With no elected representatives, citizens have limited avenues to address issues related to infrastructure, sanitation, and public services. The party emphasized that elected officials would better represent public interests.
Political Reactions
Political observers note that the demand comes amid growing public frustration over civic issues in Bengaluru. The ruling Congress government has yet to announce a date for the elections. The BNP's open letter adds pressure on CM DK Shivakumar to act on the matter.
The BNP remains hopeful that the government will respond positively and ensure timely elections to restore democratic processes in the city.
