In a significant move aimed at reviving a major public attraction, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to take direct charge of the city's long-defunct musical fountain at the Boat Club. This decision ends years of uncertainty surrounding the fate of the expensive installation, which has been non-operational for most of the time since its grand inauguration.
Ending Years of Stalemate
BMC Commissioner Sanskriti Jain officially confirmed this new operational plan during a meeting held on Wednesday. The move effectively shelves an earlier proposal to hand over the fountain's management to the state's tourism department, a plan that had remained stalled for a considerable period. By bringing the facility under its direct control, the civic body aims to ensure its consistent functioning and maintenance.
A Troubled History Since Inauguration
The musical fountain, a 97-meter-long structure built at a substantial cost of Rs 8.5 crore, was inaugurated with much fanfare by the then Chief Minister Kamal Nath on December 10, 2019. Despite its advanced features, which included photo and video projection capabilities, the public utility faced a major setback almost immediately. It operated for merely a week before shutting down, turning into a symbol of neglect and wasted public funds.
Public reception to the structure has been mixed from the outset. While many citizens welcomed the idea of an enhanced recreational facility, a strong section of critics argued that the fountain's location and design obstructed scenic views of the area. More critically, environmentalists raised alarms about its potential impact on the eco-sensitive Upper Lake, a vital water body that holds the prestigious designation of a UNESCO Ramsar Site.
Balancing Recreation with Conservation
The BMC's decision is primarily viewed as an effort to boost recreational options at the popular Boat Club precinct. Officials hope that a reliably functioning musical fountain will attract more visitors and families, enhancing the locale's appeal. However, this revival plan brings the enduring challenge of balancing tourism development with stringent environmental safeguards back into sharp focus.
Authorities will now need to address the persistent concerns regarding the fountain's operation in proximity to the protected lake.
