In a move that has taken political observers and even local party members by surprise, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to contest from three assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu's Pudukottai district. This allocation is part of a broader seat-sharing agreement covering a total of 27 constituencies. Pudukottai district comprises six assembly segments, and the BJP has been allotted the Gandarvakottai, Aranthangi, and Pudukottai seats.
Unexpected Seat Allocation Raises Eyebrows
While it was widely anticipated that the BJP would be given the Pudukottai seat, the allocation of two additional constituencies in the district has generated significant discussion. Party insiders reveal that this decision has surprised the BJP's local unit, as the party has historically had minimal presence in Aranthangi and Gandarvakottai. These seats have traditionally been strongholds of the AIADMK, the BJP's alliance partner in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
"It was a surprise for many of us that three seats have been allotted in Pudukottai, while in other districts where our winnability may have been considered stronger, not that many seats have been allotted," a district BJP source commented. "However, we are happy, and the groundwork has been underway for a while. Since the start of this year, we have been actively working on the ground."
Key Candidate and Strategic Implications
BJP west district president N Ramachandran is expected to be the party's candidate from the Pudukottai seat. Ramachandran has been an active organizer, notably managing the valedictory event of Nainar Nagenthran's statewide campaign, 'Tamilagam Thalai Nimira Tamilanin Payanam Yatra,' which was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this year.
The allocation has also drawn attention because the BJP is not contesting in districts like Karur, and fewer seats than expected have been allotted in districts such as Coimbatore. This strategic decision highlights the complex negotiations within the alliance and suggests a focused effort to build influence in specific regions.
