BJP's Ravi Raja Loses BMC Polls in Dharavi Ward to Shiv Sena (UBT) Candidate
BJP's Ravi Raja Loses BMC Polls to Shiv Sena (UBT) in Dharavi

In a significant development in Mumbai's civic elections, BJP candidate Ravi Raja faced defeat in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls. He contested from Ward 185, which includes parts of the prominent Dharavi area. His opponent, T Jagdish from the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, emerged victorious in this closely watched electoral battle.

Vote Count Reveals Clear Margin

The election results showed a decisive outcome. T Jagdish secured a total of 8,860 votes from the ward's electorate. In contrast, Ravi Raja managed to poll 6,388 votes. This translates to a winning margin of 2,472 votes for the Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate. The loss represents a notable setback for Raja, who is a seasoned figure in Mumbai's political landscape.

A Veteran's Political Journey

Ravi Raja is no newcomer to Mumbai politics. He spent over four decades as a member of the Indian National Congress before making a switch. During his long tenure with Congress, he became a familiar and influential presence within the civic body. Raja served as a corporator for five consecutive terms from the F-North Ward. He also held the important position of Leader of the Opposition in the BMC during his time with Congress.

Recent Shift to BJP

The veteran politician joined the Bharatiya Janata Party just before the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections. This move came after the Congress party denied him a ticket to contest. Raja had expressed a strong desire to run from the Sion Koliwada assembly constituency. He argued that his experience as a five-term corporator made him deserving of the candidacy.

His induction into the BJP was a formal affair. It took place in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar. Recognizing his extensive administrative experience and deep understanding of local civic issues, the BJP quickly appointed him as a vice-president of its Mumbai unit.

Electoral Challenges in 2026

The 2026 civic polls presented unexpected hurdles for Raja. He was unable to contest from his traditional stronghold, the F-North Ward. This area was reserved for women candidates under the election rules. Consequently, he had to enter the electoral fray from a different constituency.

Ward 185 became his new battleground. This ward possesses a distinct political and social profile compared to his previous domain. Despite his efforts and the BJP's backing, the Shiv Sena (UBT) managed to maintain its foothold in this area. The party successfully defended its position against the experienced challenger.

This election outcome highlights the dynamic and competitive nature of Mumbai's municipal politics. It also underscores the challenges faced by politicians when switching parties and contesting from unfamiliar territories.
