BJP Condemns Congress Government for Excluding Himachal Vigilance Bureau from RTI Act
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on the Congress-led state government in Himachal Pradesh for its decision to exclude the State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau from the purview of the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Senior BJP spokesperson Sanjay Sharma, in a press statement issued from Dharamsala on Friday, denounced the move as a "dark chapter for democracy" and accused the government of attempting to shield corrupt officials and leaders from public scrutiny.
Allegations of Protecting Corruption
Sharma alleged that the government's notification, which categorizes the Vigilance Bureau as a security and intelligence organization under Section 24(4) of the RTI Act, raises serious questions about its commitment to transparency. He argued that this step is specifically designed to protect corrupt individuals within the governance system by blocking citizens from accessing crucial information.
The BJP spokesperson emphasized that the Vigilance Bureau is an investigative agency meant to serve public interest, not a secret intelligence organization. By removing it from the RTI framework, the government has effectively hindered the public's ability to seek details on corruption case investigations, delays in filing chargesheets, and other important matters, he added.
Questioning Government Promises
Sharma questioned the Congress party's electoral promise of "Vyavastha Parivartan" (systemic change), stating that the current action contradicts this pledge by insulating a key anti-corruption agency from accountability. "This notification clearly suggests that the government has something to hide from people," he alleged, highlighting a perceived lack of integrity in governance.
Threat of Protests and Legal Action
In response to the decision, Sharma declared that the BJP demands the immediate withdrawal of the notification. He warned that if the government fails to revoke it, the party will launch statewide protests and challenge the move in the Himachal Pradesh High Court. The BJP has vowed to continue defending citizens' RTI rights and opposing any attempts to weaken transparency mechanisms in the state.
The controversy underscores ongoing tensions between the ruling Congress and opposition BJP in Himachal Pradesh, with transparency and anti-corruption efforts becoming central points of political debate. This development could have significant implications for public trust and governance accountability in the region.
