As the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal approach, political parties are intensifying their preparations, with the Opposition BJP adopting a novel strategy to refine its candidate list. In a significant departure from previous practices, the BJP has decided to actively seek inputs from district-level leaders before finalizing its candidates, aiming to address past discontent among grassroots workers.
New Approach to Candidate Selection
Historically, the BJP has been criticized for not involving local leaders and grassroots workers in candidate selection processes, often leading to dissatisfaction when lists were announced. This time, the party is taking a more inclusive approach, as confirmed by a senior BJP leader who stated, "When candidate lists are announced, we see that grassroots workers and local leaders in some places are unhappy with the candidate choices. This time, their suggestions are also being taken."
According to BJP sources, district-level leaders, including district presidents, mandal sabhapatis, MLAs, and MPs, have been instructed to submit three candidate names for each constituency. This exercise, which has already commenced, is expected to continue over the next 15 days, with names being forwarded to the state leadership for review.
Focus on Individual Assembly Segments
The BJP is conducting a detailed analysis of each Assembly segment, evaluating the party's performance, advantages, and disadvantages in these areas. This meticulous assessment aims to tailor candidate choices to local dynamics, potentially enhancing the party's electoral prospects in the fiercely contested state.
Manifesto Preparation and Public Engagement
Parallel to candidate selection, the BJP has initiated the preparation of its Assembly election manifesto. In an effort to incorporate public opinion, the party plans to set up drop boxes to collect suggestions from citizens. Constituency-Specific Chargesheets Against TMC
In a combative stance, the BJP has prepared constituency-specific "chargesheets" targeting Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs. These documents list various allegations against the ruling party leaders, including:
- Central fund diversion under schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana
- "Cut-money" extortion practices
- Recruitment scams
- Breakdown of law and order
- Civic safety concerns
- Issues related to women's safety

TMC Response to BJP's Moves
When contacted, TMC spokesperson Arup Chakraborty dismissed the BJP's efforts, stating, "How the BJP selects their candidates is its internal matter. We have no comment. But what we would like to say is that whoever they select, the people of Bengal will reject them, because they are those who had called Bengali-speaking people Bangladeshi and harassed people by making them stand in SIR hearing queues. Bengal will reject them." This response reflects the ongoing political tensions and rhetoric in the state.
