BJP Poised for Historic Mayoral Wins in Telangana's Karimnagar and Nizamabad
BJP Nears First Mayoral Wins in Telangana Urban Politics

BJP Set to Script Political History in Telangana's Urban Centers

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Telangana is on the cusp of achieving a political milestone, with strong prospects of capturing the Karimnagar municipal corporation and emerging as a formidable contender in Nizamabad. This development represents a potential first for the party in securing mayoral positions within the state's urban governance framework.

Karimnagar: A Commanding Lead and Strategic Moves

In Karimnagar, the BJP has delivered a dominant performance, winning 30 out of 66 seats as of late evening counts. Party insiders express optimism about securing support from five independent rebel candidates, which could push them past the majority threshold required to claim the mayor's post. The Congress secured 14 seats, the BRS 9, and the AIMIM 3 in the corporation.

Union Minister Bandi Sanjay, the Karimnagar MP, played a pivotal role in orchestrating the campaign, shifting the party's focus towards highlighting central government development initiatives rather than its traditional Hindutva agenda. Sanjay has already declared the BJP's control over the Karimnagar corporation, extending gratitude to voters for their endorsement.

The selection of the mayoral candidate will be made from among the 30 victorious corporators and three rebel winners, who are currently being consolidated at a camp in Hyderabad's suburbs. Notably, the seat is reserved for a Backward Class (BC) candidate, ruling out former BRS mayor Sunil Rao, who recently joined the BJP, from contention.

Nizamabad: A Tight Contest with Complex Dynamics

The scenario in Nizamabad presents a more intricate and closely fought battle. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 28 out of 60 seats but remains three wards short of a majority. The Congress and AIMIM, with 17 and 14 seats respectively, have collectively secured 31 seats, setting the stage for a direct confrontation.

Party chief N Ramchander Rao confirmed that the BJP will finalize and submit its list of ex-officio members for voting on Monday. Under existing regulations, sitting legislators can cast their vote in one municipality of their choice, making this phase critical in determining the outcome for tightly contested corporations.

The Crucial Role of Ex-Officio Voting and Broader Implications

The ex-officio voting process, scheduled for Monday, will be decisive in both Karimnagar and Nizamabad. In Nizamabad, the BJP's hopes hinge on ex-officio votes and potential cross-support to offset the alliance between Congress and AIMIM.

This potential breakthrough follows the BJP's earlier strength in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, where it failed to secure the mayor's post. The party also points to its prior success in winning the Nizamabad municipal chairmanship before its upgrade to a corporation as a foundation for current gains.

BJP leaders report winning 331 wards across various municipalities and corporations in the latest polls, describing it as an encouraging performance despite aspirations for further expansion. A victory in either Karimnagar or Nizamabad would symbolize a significant entry for the BJP into Telangana's urban power structure, reshaping the state's political dynamics.
