The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Bihar marked a significant historical milestone with a series of events across the state, commemorating the 1,000th anniversary of Mahmud Ghazni's attack on the iconic Somnath Temple in Gujarat. The national observance, named Somnath Swabhiman Parv-2026, saw enthusiastic participation, with a major celebration held at the Khajpura Shiva Temple in Patna.
Statewide Observance and Leadership Call
As part of the nationwide campaign, the BJP organized functions in various locations throughout Bihar. Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi made a public appeal, urging citizens across the state to participate in large numbers to honor the temple's legacy. The Parv is centered on celebrating the glorious history, faith, and self-respect associated with the Somnath Temple, which was first attacked by the invader Mahmud Ghazni in the year 1026.
Grand Deepotsav Illuminates Patna
The focal point in the capital was a magnificent Deepotsav, or festival of lights, held at the Khajpura Shiva Temple. The event saw the lighting of 1,000 oil lamps within the temple premises, creating a resonant symbol of resilience and cultural pride. The gathering was organized by Digha MLA Sanjeev Chaurasia and witnessed the presence of a substantial crowd, including senior party officials.
Deputy CM Highlights Historical Context and Present Leadership
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary attended the ceremony and offered prayers. Addressing the attendees, he contextualized the historical event. He described Mahmud Ghazni's invasion as a "wicked attempt to destroy the holy Somnath Temple." Choudhary then linked the past to the present, stating, "Today, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this glorious history is being celebrated across the country as Somnath Swabhiman Parv."
The event was graced by the presence of BJP's general secretary (organization) Bhikhubhai Dalsania, alongside a large number of party workers and devotees. The celebrations in Patna and across Bihar underscore the party's effort to connect historical memory with contemporary cultural assertion, turning a moment of historical trauma into an occasion for collective remembrance and national pride.
