BJP expels ex-Mizoram speaker Lalrinliana Sailo

The Bharatiya Janata Party's Mizoram unit has expelled Lalrinliana Sailo, a former speaker of the state assembly and a member of the party's state council, for engaging in anti-party activities. The expulsion order was issued by state general secretary Lalfakzuala Hauzel, who stated that state president K Beichhua had notified the decision with immediate effect.

Reason for Expulsion

According to the order, the action was taken after Sailo failed to submit any reply to the show cause notice issued by the State Disciplinary Action Committee of the BJP Mizoram Pradesh. The matter was thoroughly discussed and deliberated upon during the Extended Office Bearers Meeting. The order stated that after due consideration of the breach of party discipline and anti-party activities, the decision was final and binding. Copies of the expulsion order were sent to BJP National President Nitin Nabin, National General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santosh, BJP Northeast Coordinator Sambit Patra, and others.

Political Background of Lalrinliana Sailo

A former student leader, Sailo began his political career with the Congress party. He became a member of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly and was inducted into the Congress ministry between 2008 and 2013, holding portfolios such as health and family welfare, and trade and commerce. Before the 2018 state assembly elections, he left the Congress and joined the Mizo National Front (MNF). He successfully contested from the Chalfilh assembly constituency and was elected as the Speaker of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly.

In 2023, after it became clear that the MNF would not give him a ticket for the 2023 assembly polls, Sailo left the MNF and joined the BJP. He contested from the Mamit assembly seat in the 2023 elections on a BJP ticket but was unsuccessful.
