BJP Sweeps Maharashtra Local Polls, Wins 129 of 288 Bodies; Big Boost for BMC Battle
BJP Dominates Maharashtra Local Polls, Wins 129 Bodies

In a powerful demonstration of its entrenched strength, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has delivered a commanding performance in the recent Maharashtra local body elections. The results, declared on December 21, 2025, solidify the party's political dominance in the state just a year after it swept to power in the assembly.

A Resounding Mandate for the Ruling Coalition

The BJP emerged as the single-largest party in a staggering 129 out of 288 local bodies that went to polls in the initial two phases. The ruling Mahayuti coalition, comprising the BJP, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, collectively crossed the 200-mark. While the BJP led the charge, its allies secured significant wins, with the Shiv Sena winning 51 local bodies and the NCP securing 33.

This outcome stands in sharp contrast to the performance of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The coalition barely managed to touch the 50-seat mark. The Congress was the top performer within the MVA with 35 wins, while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) could only manage eight local bodies each.

Fadnavis Hails Victory, Eyes Upcoming Civic Polls

The BJP has projected this victory as a major validation of the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the party's central leadership. The win comes as a significant morale booster ahead of the high-stakes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections scheduled for January 15, 2026.

Fadnavis, who addressed 38 rallies across the state in a vigorous campaign, described the results as a litmus test for alliance management. "I express gratitude to the people who have reposed trust in the BJP and our alliance partners. They have given a mandate for good governance in the state and the Centre. The BJP has once again established itself as the number one party in Maharashtra," the Chief Minister stated.

State BJP president Ravindra Chavan credited the victory to Fadnavis's political roadmap and relentless push for a development agenda. The party campaigned for these local polls with the intensity of a parliamentary election, using it to test its grassroots strength and advance its long-term goal of establishing a 'shatpratishat BJP' (100% BJP) presence in Maharashtra.

Implications for Allies and a Struggling Opposition

While the Mahayuti celebrates, the results present a complex picture for the BJP's allies. The BJP's overwhelming dominance underscores its ambition to eventually operate independently, a prospect that may cause unease within the coalition. For the opposition MVA, the results are a severe setback.

The MVA, still struggling to reorganize after its assembly poll defeat last year, now faces an ominous signal before the crucial BMC battle. The Shiv Sena (UBT), which controlled the BMC for nearly three decades, and the NCP (SP) failed to even reach double digits, a blow that could further weaken their already dented grassroots structures following the splits in their original parties.

The Congress attributed its poor performance to alleged misuse of power by the ruling coalition. State Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal accused the Mahayuti of deploying "money and muscle power" and wilfully misusing government machinery to influence the election outcome.

As the dust settles, the BJP's sweeping victory has firmly shifted the political momentum in its favour, setting the stage for an intense contest in the upcoming municipal corporation elections, with the Mumbai civic polls being the most significant prize.
