BJP Levels Serious Allegations of Voter Suppression in Ranchi Civic Elections

As the campaign for the Ranchi civic polls concluded on Saturday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders launched a scathing attack on the Jharkhand government, accusing it of deliberately altering polling centers for lakhs of electors to hinder their ability to vote. The allegations have sparked a major political controversy just days before the elections scheduled for February 23.

Union Minister Claims Family Members Assigned Different Polling Booths

Union Minister of Defence Sanjay Seth, addressing reporters in Ranchi, revealed a personal example to support the BJP's claims. He stated that members of his own family, who previously voted together at a single polling booth, have now been allocated to different locations. "Earlier, all of us voted in one booth," Seth emphasized, suggesting this was part of a broader pattern affecting numerous voters across the city.

State BJP President Raises Concerns Over Election Security

In a separate media interaction, Jharkhand BJP President Aditya Sahu escalated the accusations by highlighting security concerns. He claimed that the BJP had formally requested the deployment of central forces to ensure fair and transparent voting on February 23. "However, the state election commission did not take any step in this regard," Sahu asserted.

He further expressed apprehension about the electoral process, citing the use of ballot papers instead of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the reliance on state police. "The use of ballot papers and the state police in the elections have created apprehensions of a possible misuse of state machinery," Sahu added, implying potential manipulation by the ruling government.

Congress Dismisses Allegations as Baseless and Fear-Driven

Responding swiftly to the BJP's claims, Jharkhand Congress spokesperson Rakesh Kumar Sinha outright rejected the allegations. He accused the BJP of lacking faith in democratic institutions. "BJP leaders are speaking out of fear of losing the election," Sinha claimed, dismissing the voter suppression charges as politically motivated.

Sinha further argued that the BJP's distrust extends to the Constitution and police forces in states where it is not in power. "BJP does not have faith in the Constitution and in the police forces of states where it is not in government," he stated, framing the controversy as part of a larger pattern of BJP behavior.

Key Points of Contention in the Ranchi Civic Polls

  • BJP alleges systematic changes to polling centers affecting lakhs of voters in Ranchi.
  • Union Minister Sanjay Seth provides a personal anecdote about family members being assigned different booths.
  • State BJP President Aditya Sahu criticizes the election commission for not deploying central forces.
  • Concerns raised about the use of ballot papers and state police potentially enabling misuse.
  • Congress rejects all claims, attributing them to BJP's fear of electoral defeat.

The escalating war of words between the BJP and Congress has cast a shadow over the upcoming Ranchi civic elections, with both parties digging in their heels. As voters prepare to head to the polls, these allegations of voter suppression and electoral malpractice are likely to dominate the final discourse, raising questions about the integrity and fairness of the electoral process in Jharkhand's capital.
