Opposition Stages Protests in Bihar Over Alarming Rise in Rape Cases
In a significant display of dissent, opposition members in Bihar organized protests at the porticos of the state legislature on Friday, voicing strong concerns over what they described as a "sudden spurt in rape cases" across the state. The demonstrations highlighted growing tensions regarding law and order under the current administration.
Rabri Devi Leads Charge Outside Legislative Council
Former Chief Minister Rabri Devi spearheaded the opposition's protests outside the state legislative council. She was seen holding placards and leading slogans against the government, with other opposition members rallying behind her. Rabri directly questioned the government's effectiveness in curbing sexual violence, asking pointedly if this situation should be labeled as "Ram Rajya" (an ideal state of governance).
In her statements to reporters, Rabri emphasized that rape incidents are occurring almost daily throughout Bihar, yet the government appears inactive in addressing them. She raised the issue formally in the council, alleging that as many as 35 rape cases were reported in February alone, and demanded clarity from the Chair on the government's actions to combat such crimes.
Government Response and Tejashwi Yadav's Allegations
In response to Rabri's remarks, Minister Sunil Kumar acknowledged the government's concern over these incidents, assuring that "actions were being taken against the criminals" and that law violators would not be spared. However, outside the state assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, Rabri's son, launched a separate attack on the government.
Tejashwi alleged that crime has peaked in Bihar due to governmental insensitivity, particularly criticizing the BJP-ruled states for increased criminal activities. He accused the government of intimidating the opposition for raising these issues, rather than focusing on justice for victims. Tejashwi also questioned the political dynamics, noting the chief minister's decision to relinquish the crucial home department to its ally, the BJP.
Social Media Amplifies Concerns
Amid the protests, social media platforms associated with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and its leaders have been flooded with reports and clippings of criminal incidents. A pinned RJD post lamented, "Nirbhaya-like cases are taking place every day in Bihar but who cares?" reflecting widespread frustration over the perceived lack of accountability and action from authorities.
The protests underscore a deepening crisis in Bihar's law and order situation, with opposition forces mobilizing to demand stronger measures against sexual violence and improved governance.
