Bhowanipore Battle Heats Up: Mamata vs Suvendu in Urban Showdown

Five years after the last electoral contest, the battleground of Bhowanipore has transformed from a predominantly rural setting to a fully urban constituency. Yet, the high-stakes contest between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari remains as unpredictable and fiercely contested as ever.

Trinamool Congress Redraws Strategy After Voter List Revision

In the wake of the Summary Revision process, which struck off 41,068 voters—nearly one-fifth of the electorate—the Trinamool Congress has been compelled to overhaul its booth-level strategy. Senior party leaders have conducted a series of meetings with workers across all wards in the constituency, with councillors assigned the critical task of briefing and leading local teams.

Even before these formal meetings concluded, party cadres had already initiated a vigorous wall-painting campaign, prominently displaying the chief minister's name across the constituency. In Bakulbagan under Ward 72, long-time Trinamool workers Swarup Ghosh and Souvik Das, also known as Mati, were diligently ensuring that all suitable walls carried CM Mamata Banerjee's name.

"This is our opportunity to avenge the 2021 results, and we will execute it precisely as Didi has planned. This is our backyard, and Suvendu is an outsider," declared Das. The workers have set an ambitious target to complete the wall campaign within 72 hours. Ghosh added confidently, "Didi has not lost here since 1991. That record will remain unbroken this year."

Focus on Apartments and Key Wards

Local councillor Sandip Ranjan Bakshi emphasized the disciplined approach, stating, "We are meeting our workers and strategizing meticulously. We will follow the leadership's directions like disciplined soldiers." Another councillor, who requested anonymity, revealed that the party's focus is on repeated outreach to every household, with apartments being particularly crucial.

The councillor explained, "The Summary Revision has placed a large section of Muslim voters—over 56%—under adjudication. We must perform exceptionally well in key wards, especially 70 and 72, where we trailed the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls." With indications that Chief Minister Banerjee may commence her campaign this weekend, party sources confirmed that groundwork is being fast-tracked to ensure readiness.

BJP Intensifies Direct Voter Contact

While Ward 72 witnessed intense Trinamool activity, the adjoining Ward 73 saw the BJP focusing on direct voter contact through door-to-door campaigns and visits to local temples. BJP Dakshin district president Anupam Bhattacharya announced, "Adhikari will begin his campaign from Chakraberia Road at 11 am on Thursday. We have already conducted extensive door-to-door outreach over the past 48 hours and initiated our own wall-writing efforts."

As part of its outreach initiative, BJP's Bhowanipore Mandal workers engaged with devotees and locals at the Harlal Temple on Chatterjee Street. Party worker Ranjan Pahari noted, "We appealed for public support and discussed upcoming programs. There will be continuous coordination at the booth level. We can already sense a growing desire for change among the electorate."

The political atmosphere in Bhowanipore is charged with anticipation as both camps leave no stone unturned in their quest for victory. The urban landscape now sets the stage for a dramatic electoral showdown that could have significant implications for West Bengal's political future.
