Former Minister Bhim Singh Urges Immediate Ban on Sand Mining in Falgu River
Former minister and Rajya Sabha member Bhim Singh made a strong demand on Friday. He called for a complete ban on sand mining activities in the Falgu river stretch between Bodh Gaya and Bitho village. This area lies north of Gaya town in Bihar.
DISHA Committee Meeting Addresses Critical Issues
Singh raised this important demand during a meeting of the District Coordination and Monitoring Committee. People commonly refer to this committee as DISHA. Gaya MP and Union MSME minister Jitan Ram Manjhi presided over the meeting.
The former minister did not just make an oral request. He also submitted a written note to reinforce his demand for the mining ban. Singh described the issue as extremely important for the region.
Environmental Concerns Drive the Demand
Bhim Singh pointed to indiscriminate and mechanized sand mining in the Falgu river. He emphasized the adverse impact this activity has on the environment. Several environmentalists have long been demanding such a ban, according to Singh.
The Rajya Sabha member explained why this issue matters so much. Gaya has been facing a persistent water crisis for some time. A large section of the population depends on mechanically pumped groundwater for their daily needs.
Sand mining in the Falgu river threatens to worsen this already difficult situation. The activity leads to a decline in the water table, making water access even more challenging.
"Sand is regarded as a very good water retention agent," Singh stated during the meeting. He added that mining activity also reduces biodiversity in the river ecosystem.
Additional Concerns Raised During Meeting
Bhim Singh's written note contained another significant concern. He expressed worry about the undue delay in shifting the wholesale grain and vegetable market. The proposed relocation would move the market to the Bazar Samiti complex at Chandauti.
According to Singh, the continued disuse of the sprawling complex represents a serious issue. He believes this situation warrants urgent action from authorities.
Union Minister Calls for Positive Approach
At the beginning of the meeting, Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi urged all participants to remain positive and cooperative. He reminded everyone that the DISHA meeting focused specifically on development-related issues.
Committee members held extensive discussions on several important matters. The condition of roads in the district received particular attention. Rural roads came under special scrutiny during these discussions.
Multiple Development Issues Discussed
According to a press note issued by the public relations department, the meeting covered several other important topics. These included:
- Issues related to the Prime Minister Housing scheme
- Road construction on forest land
- Education sector concerns
- Public health matters
The DISHA committee meeting served as an important platform for addressing multiple development challenges facing Gaya district. Bhim Singh's strong demand for a sand mining ban highlighted the urgent need to balance development with environmental protection.
