Assam marked the national Armed Forces Flag Day with solemnity and a significant new initiative aimed at honouring its oldest veterans and brave families. The state-level ceremony, held at Lok Bhavan in Guwahati, was graced by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who launched a pioneering programme named 'Sainik Tujhe Salaam'.
A Salute to the Senior Most Veterans and Brave Hearts
The newly launched 'Sainik Tujhe Salaam' initiative is designed to provide special recognition to the most senior members of the military community. It specifically targets Armed Forces veterans above the age of 90, along with Veer Naris (war widows) and Veer Mothers. The programme mandates annual home visits to these honoured individuals by the district administrations and the Zila Sainik Welfare Offices across Assam, ensuring they receive the state's gratitude and support directly at their doorsteps.
Governor Hails Sacrifice, Details Assam's Veteran Demographics
Addressing the gathering, Governor Acharya paid rich tributes to the martyrs and serving personnel who defend the nation with unwavering courage. He highlighted the multifaceted role of the military, from guarding treacherous borders to leading disaster relief operations, calling it a symbol of courage, discipline and compassion.
Reaffirming the state's commitment, the Governor provided key statistics, noting that Assam is home to approximately 41,968 ex-servicemen and 10,361 Veer Naris. He commended the relentless work of the Directorate of Sainik Welfare and the 21 District Sainik Welfare offices in supporting this large community throughout the year.
National Recognition and a Call for Public Support
Governor Acharya expressed pride that Assam's exemplary work in ex-servicemen welfare had received special commendation from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at a national conference in New Delhi in September. This acknowledgment underscores the state's proactive approach.
During his speech, the Governor also made a heartfelt appeal to the public for generous contributions to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund. He emphasized that while no monetary contribution can ever equal the sacrifices made by soldiers, public support plays a crucial role in alleviating the hardships faced by military members and their families. He expressed confidence that Assam would continue its tireless efforts for the welfare of soldiers and their next of kin.
The Armed Forces Flag Day, observed across India, serves as a reminder to honour the legacy of the fallen and support the living heroes who have served the nation.
