Assam is set to witness a new government formation today as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will take oath along with four other ministers. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati at 11 am. Governor Jagdish Mukhi will administer the oath of office and secrecy to the new ministers.
Who are the Four Ministers?
The four ministers who will take oath along with CM Himanta Biswa Sarma are:
- Rameswar Teli: A prominent leader from the tea tribe community, Teli has been a Member of Parliament from Dibrugarh. He is expected to be given a key portfolio.
- Atul Bora: A seasoned politician and former minister, Bora is a senior leader of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally of the BJP. He has previously held the agriculture portfolio.
- Charan Boro: A leader from the Bodoland region, Boro represents the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and is likely to be given charge of the welfare of the Bodo community.
- Ajanta Neog: A woman leader from the BJP, Neog is a former minister and has been given a place in the cabinet to ensure women's representation.
Portfolios and Alliances
The new cabinet reflects the coalition dynamics in Assam. The BJP, along with its allies AGP and UPPL, has formed the government. CM Sarma will retain key portfolios like home, finance, and personnel. The four ministers will be allocated portfolios based on their experience and community representation. Rameswar Teli is expected to get the industry or labour department, while Atul Bora may continue with agriculture. Charan Boro is likely to handle the welfare of the Bodo community, and Ajanta Neog may be given the education or social welfare portfolio.
Significance of the Oath-Taking
The formation of the new government comes after the Assam assembly elections held in March-April 2026. The BJP-led alliance won a comfortable majority, securing 75 seats out of 126. The swearing-in ceremony will be a low-key affair due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with limited attendance and strict adherence to protocols.
This marks the second term for Himanta Biswa Sarma as Chief Minister, who took over from Sarbananda Sonowal in 2021. The new cabinet is expected to focus on development, infrastructure, and welfare schemes for all communities in Assam.
