Assam Elections 2026: Key Battlegrounds and High Turnout

Assam witnessed a historic voter turnout of over 85% across all 126 constituencies on April 9, marking one of the highest participation rates in recent years. The surge was observed in both rural and urban areas, reflecting widespread enthusiasm among voters.

Main Contestants

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is vying for a third consecutive term. The Congress party, under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi—son of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha—is striving to regain its foothold. The election is primarily a contest between the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP and a fragmented opposition, with the campaign characterized by intense political exchanges.

Exit Polls Predict BJP Victory

Exit polls released on Wednesday evening indicate a clear majority for the incumbent government, with most pollsters projecting a third consecutive term for the BJP in the tea-producing state. Beyond the main contest, several constituencies are expected to witness closely fought battles shaped by legacy factors and narrow margins.
