Assam Congress President Calls for Unity Amid Candidate List Controversy

In a move that has ignited a fresh political storm in Assam, Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has appealed to party leaders and workers to unite against what he termed the "arrogance" and "corruption" of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This call comes as the Congress's first list of 42 candidates for the upcoming elections has triggered allegations of nepotism, with the BJP seizing on the issue to criticize the opposition party.

Nepotism Allegations and Political Backlash

The candidate list, released on Tuesday, includes six sons of senior Congress leaders, among them offspring of three former chief ministers. This has prompted CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to derisively label it a "list of successors," accusing the Congress of promoting familism over merit. In a sharp attack on Wednesday, Sarma stated, "In the Congress list, there are only names of sons and daughters of their fathers. It can be termed as a list or as a roll of successors. There is no mention of general Congress workers. But in the BJP list, people will see names of general Congress workers."

Congress leaders, however, have countered these claims, arguing that the selections are strategically balanced to include both experienced faces and younger candidates. They emphasize that this mix is crucial for what they describe as a decisive contest against the BJP in Assam.

Gogoi's Appeal for Internal Cohesion

Responding to the criticism and aiming to quell potential internal dissent, Gaurav Gogoi addressed the controversy head-on. He asserted that the list was on expected lines and made a heartfelt appeal to those who were excluded from the ticket allocation. "Today, we all in the Congress must unite and those who, for some reasons, could not get a ticket, for them my message is that you all are fighters of Congress. Party leadership has requested you all to wait for a while (for tickets)," Gogoi said.

He further framed the upcoming electoral battle as a fight against CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP's perceived arrogance and corruption, and a mission to build a "new Bor Asom" or greater Assam. Gogoi also defended the timing of the announcement, noting that he had previously indicated at a February press conference that the first list would be released in the last week of February or the first week of March, countering claims from some opposition parties that it was premature before finalizing an alliance.

Key Candidates and Familial Connections

The Congress list features notable names with strong political lineages:

  • Gaurav Gogoi, contesting from Jorhat, is the son of late former chief minister Tarun Gogoi.
  • Debabrata Saikia, nominated from Nazira, is the son of late former chief minister Hiteswar Saikia.
  • Diganta Barman, running from Barkhetri, is the son of late former chief minister Bhumidhar Barman.
  • Tanzil Hussain from Samaguri and Prateek Bordoloi from Margherita are sons of Lok Sabha MPs Rakibul Hussain and Pradyut Bordoloi, respectively.
  • Pranjal Ghatowar, candidate for Chabua-Lahowal, is the son of former Union minister Paban Singh Ghatowar.
  • Pallabi Saikia Gogoi, contesting from Teok, is the daughter-in-law of late ex-MLA Membor Gogoi.

Other candidates include first-time entrant Prateek Bordoloi, along with former ministers such as Ripun Bora, Pranati Phukan, and Ajit Singh, as well as sitting MLAs like Nandita Das, Diganta Barman, and Nurul Huda.

Broader Political Implications

This development underscores the intense political rivalry in Assam as parties gear up for the elections. The nepotism row has not only sparked internal debates within the Congress but also provided ammunition for the BJP to challenge the opposition's credibility. As Gogoi rallies his party to focus on the larger fight against the BJP, the candidate list controversy highlights the challenges of balancing legacy, experience, and youth in Indian politics.

The coming days are likely to see further political maneuvering, with both sides sharpening their strategies. The Congress's ability to maintain unity and address criticism will be critical in its bid to counter the BJP's dominance in the state.
