The Andhra Pradesh state government has decided to proceed with construction works in the Amaravati capital region, despite the Prime Minister's general suggestion to postpone major construction activities for one year in light of current conditions. Speaking to the media after the cabinet sub-committee meeting on Friday, Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana stated that halting the capital project once again would severely impact thousands of farmers who had given up their lands for the development of the capital city.
Government Commitment to Capital Project
Narayana emphasized that the government remains committed to continuing the capital construction works, as nearly 29,000 farmers voluntarily surrendered their lands with high hopes for the development of the greenfield capital. He noted that the Amaravati project had already been stalled for the past five years, and any further delay would cause hardship to farmers who have been waiting for the revival of the capital city project.
“The Prime Minister advised postponement of heavy construction works for one year, considering the present circumstances. However, Amaravati is the state capital, and we are continuing the works keeping farmers’ interests in mind,” Narayana said.
No Shortage of Resources
The minister clarified that there is no shortage of diesel for the ongoing capital construction works, and the government is ensuring uninterrupted execution of projects in Amaravati. He assured that all necessary resources are being provided to maintain the pace of development.
Land Allotments and Cancellations
Narayana revealed that the government has so far allotted 1,269 acres to 114 organizations in the capital region. Of these, 70 are government institutions while 44 are private organizations. He mentioned that three institutions had cancelled their allocations due to various reasons, while three others were allotted alternative land parcels instead of the sites originally assigned to them.
Interest from Film Industry
The minister also disclosed that representatives from Mumbai-based film industry groups had recently approached the government seeking land allocations in Amaravati. He stated that the government is carefully scrutinizing applications and requesting financial statements and balance sheets from companies before considering allotments.
Cabinet Sub-Committee Meeting
The cabinet sub-committee meeting was attended by ministers Payyavula Keshav, T G Bharath, Kandula Durgesh, Kollu Ravindra, and Gummidi Sandhya Rani. The meeting focused on reviewing the progress of the capital project and ensuring that the interests of farmers are protected.
