Ahmedabad braces for significant traffic disruptions on Monday as the city prepares to host Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The high-profile visit, centered around the International Kite Festival, has prompted the city's traffic police to implement major road closures to ensure security and smooth traffic management.
Road Closures for VVIP Security
The most significant closure will affect the Sabarmati Riverfront (West) stretch. For the duration of the visit, the road from the Vadaj Crematorium crossroads to Ambedkar Bridge will be completely shut down for all vehicles in both directions. This measure is directly linked to the security protocols for the dignitaries attending the kite festival.
Alternative Routes for Commuters
To help citizens navigate the disruptions, the traffic police have advised using a well-defined alternative corridor. Commuters should plan to travel via Vadaj Crematorium, Vadaj Circle, Usmanpura crossroads, the central section of the Income Tax Overbridge, Town Hall crossroads, and then proceed towards Paldi crossroads. Authorities urge the public to factor in extra travel time and follow police instructions.
Separate Cadila Bridge Shutdown for Bullet Train Work
In an unrelated but concurrent development, the Cadila Bridge will also be closed to facilitate construction work for the bullet train project. The central BRTS lane on the bridge will be shut from both ends for approximately 600 meters, with this closure remaining in effect until January 30.
During daytime hours, BRTS buses will be rerouted through the side roads adjacent to the bridge. For night-time travel, vehicles will be allowed to use the side roads on an alternate basis. Traffic will be shifted to one side or the other depending on which section is under operational control, ensuring continuous movement is maintained.
