The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has emerged as the dominant force in the civic elections held in the towns of Jandiala, Ramdas, and Rayya in Amritsar district. The results, declared on Wednesday, showed the party winning a majority of the wards in all three municipal councils.
Jandiala Municipal Council
In Jandiala, AAP candidates won 11 out of the 15 wards, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) secured three seats and the Congress managed to win only one. The AAP's performance in Jandiala was particularly impressive as it managed to wrest control from the traditional parties.
Ramdas Municipal Council
Similarly, in Ramdas, the AAP won 10 out of the 13 wards. The SAD got two seats and the Congress was reduced to just one. The results indicate a clear shift in voter preference towards the AAP in this region.
Rayya Municipal Council
In Rayya, the AAP bagged 9 out of the 11 wards. The SAD and Congress managed to win one seat each. The victory in Rayya further consolidates the AAP's hold over the civic bodies in the district.
Reactions from AAP Leaders
Local AAP leaders expressed jubilation over the results. They credited the party's development agenda and the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for the landslide victory. The party's focus on providing basic amenities and transparent governance resonated with the voters, they said.
Opposition's Performance
The opposition parties, particularly the SAD and Congress, faced a severe setback. Their candidates could not put up a strong fight, and the results reflect a growing dissatisfaction with their performance. The SAD managed to secure a few seats but was far behind the AAP.
Voter Turnout and Campaign
The elections witnessed a decent voter turnout, with people coming out to exercise their franchise. The campaign was marked by intense canvassing by all parties, but the AAP's ground-level workers managed to connect with the electorate effectively.
The results of these civic elections are seen as a litmus test for the AAP government in Punjab, and the party has come out with flying colors. The victory is expected to boost the morale of party workers ahead of future elections.
