AAP Sweeps Punjab Rural Polls, Wins 62.8% Zila Parishad Seats
AAP Dominates Punjab Zila Parishad & Panchayat Samiti Polls

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has delivered a commanding performance in the recent rural local body elections in Punjab, consolidating its hold on the state's political landscape. The ruling party secured a decisive majority in both the zila parishad (district council) and panchayat samiti (block committee) polls, the results of which were declared on Thursday.

A Resounding Victory in Numbers

The AAP swept 218 out of the 347 zila parishad zones, translating to a dominant 62.8% of the seats. In the panchayat samiti elections, the party's victory was equally impressive, with wins in 1,531 out of 2,838 zones, or 53.9%. Cumulatively, the party registered victory in 1,749 of the total 3,185 zones across both tiers of rural governance, capturing 54.9% of all contested seats.

This overwhelming result comes a little over a year before the next Punjab Legislative Assembly elections and is being viewed as a significant indicator of the party's rural penetration.

Opposition Holds Ground in Specific Strongholds

Despite AAP's state-wide dominance, the principal opposition parties managed to retain influence in their traditional bastions. The Congress party emerged as a distant second, winning 62 zila parishad seats and 612 panchayat samiti zones. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) occupied the third position, securing 46 zila parishad zones and 445 panchayat samiti zones.

The AAP leadership claimed that the results prove the party's appeal has successfully permeated the rural heartland of Punjab, a segment crucial for any state-level electoral success.

Leadership Hails 'Pro-Incumbency' Verdict

AAP's national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, addressed the media following the results. Kejriwal described the outcome as a clear "pro-incumbency" mandate. He emphasized that these polls were conducted near the end of his government's term, signifying public approval for the AAP administration's policies and work.

Kejriwal also pointed to the razor-thin margins of victory on several seats as evidence that the elections were "free and fair." He stated that the process was conducted without any misuse of government machinery, countering allegations that had been raised by opposition parties in the run-up to the polls.

Chief Minister Mann stated that the party's dominant win reflects the people's trust in the AAP government's development agenda for Punjab's villages.

Regional Performance Highlights

The party's performance was particularly strong in several key districts. In the zila parishad elections, AAP's best performances were recorded in:

  • Hoshiarpur: 22 of 25 zones
  • Amritsar: 19 of 24 zones
  • Patiala: 19 of 23 zones
  • Tarn Taran: 17 of 20 zones

In the panchayat samiti polls, the ruling party won 148 of 195 zones in Amritsar and 143 of 208 zones in Hoshiarpur, demonstrating deep support in these regions.

The results solidify AAP's position as the foremost political force in rural Punjab and set the stage for a highly contested assembly election in 2025.
