In a significant boost to the state's police force, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma formally inducted 76 newly appointed Sub-Inspectors (SIs) on Friday. The appointment letters were handed over during a ceremony held at the 2nd MLP Battalion headquarters in Goeragre, located in the West Garo Hills district.
A Competitive and Transparent Recruitment Process
Addressing the new recruits, Chief Minister Sangma highlighted the highly competitive nature of the selection drive. He revealed that over 21,000 candidates had initially applied for the coveted positions, making the success of these 76 officers a notable achievement. The CM commended the Director General of Police (DGP) and the recruitment board for ensuring the entire process was conducted with fairness, transparency, and efficiency despite various challenges.
DGP Idashisha Nongrang, who was present at the event, provided details of the rigorous recruitment timeline. The process commenced with an advertisement issued in March 2024. The successful induction of this batch strengthens the overall manpower of the Meghalaya Police, which now stands at over 17,000 personnel.
Profile of the New Batch and Their Postings
The new cohort of Sub-Inspectors represents a blend of high qualifications and gender diversity. The batch consists of 49 male and 27 female officers, meaning women constitute more than 35% of this intake. The group is notably well-educated, featuring individuals with MBA degrees, 23 postgraduates, and several officers with technical educational backgrounds.
Regarding their deployment, DGP Nongrang announced that one-third of the newly appointed officers will be posted in the East Khasi Hills district. The remaining personnel will be distributed across 12 other units and districts throughout the state of Meghalaya.
CM's Charge: Serve with Humanity and Integrity
Congratulating the officers, CM Sangma described the day as a major milestone in their lives and careers. He emphasized that the role transcends a mere job, stating, “This is not just about a job; it is about serving the people of Meghalaya and the nation.”
The Chief Minister reminded the recruits of the immense public trust placed in the police force. He urged them to live up to the expectations of the government, their families, and the citizens of the state. Describing Sub-Inspectors as the “eyes and ears of the police and the government,” Sangma stressed their critical role as a vital link between the people and the decision-makers in the administration.
He offered crucial advice, cautioning the young officers against letting power or position negatively influence their conduct. Sangma urged them to remain humane while exercising their authority. Furthermore, he advised them to take their forthcoming training with utmost seriousness, calling it the essential foundation for their professional journey ahead.
