50 IPS officers promoted by UP government

In a significant administrative move, the Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday gave its approval for the promotion of 50 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers spanning several seniority batches. The decision marks a major career advancement for officers who have served in key positions across the state.

Senior Officers Elevated to Additional Director General Rank

The most notable promotions are for three senior officers from the 2001 batch, who have been elevated to the prestigious rank of Additional Director General (ADG). Praveen Kumar, who currently serves as the Inspector General (IG) of the Faizabad range, played a pivotal role in overseeing the elaborate security arrangements for the historic first consecration ceremony of the Ram Lalla idol in Ayodhya in January 2024. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Tarun Gaba, another officer promoted to ADG, is currently posted as the IG of Security Headquarters and the IG of Lucknow range. He previously served as the Police Commissioner of Prayagraj, where he was at the helm of the massive and complex law and order management during the Maha Kumbh Mela in 2025.

The third officer from the 2001 batch elevated to ADG is Ashutosh Kumar.

Batch-Wise Promotions Across the Ranks

The promotion list extends beyond the senior-most officers, encompassing several batches to fill higher positions within the state police hierarchy.

For the 2008 batch, six officers have been promoted from the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) to Inspector General (IG). The promoted officers are:

  • Kiran S
  • Anand Sureshrao Kulkarni
  • N Kolanchi
  • Amit Verma
  • Rajeev Malhotra
  • Akhilesh Kumar Nigam

From the 2012 batch, a total of 13 officers have been elevated from Senior Superintendent of Police (Selection Grade) to the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG). The list includes officers such as Sachindra Patel, Vipin Tada, Pratap Gopendra Yadav, Abhishek Yadav, Sankalp Sharma, Somen Barma, Yamuna Prasad, Santosh Kumar Mishra, Hemraj Meena, and Rajkaran Nayyar.

2013 Batch Officers Granted Selection Grade

The promotions also benefited 28 officers from the 2013 batch, who have been granted the selection grade rank of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). This group includes officers like Anurag Arya, Abhishek Mahajan, Ashish Srivastava, Khyati Garg, Gaurav Grover, Akash Tomar, and Yashveer Singh.

This large-scale promotion drive by the Uttar Pradesh government is seen as a routine administrative process to fill higher vacancies and reward service. It ensures a streamlined command structure within the state police force by placing experienced officers in positions of greater responsibility. The officers promoted have handled some of the most challenging security and law and order assignments in recent years, including major religious events that drew national attention.
