More than 300 farmers across various panchayats in Canacona have sought government relief after their paddy fields suffered significant damage from unexpected rainfall, according to zonal agriculture officials.
Worst-Affected Areas Identified
Mahendra Pagi, the zonal agriculture officer at Canacona zonal office, confirmed that applications have been pouring in from distressed farmers whose crops were destroyed by the unseasonal weather conditions. The most severely impacted farmers hail from Agonda, Khola and Gaodongrim regions, where paddy cultivation has taken the hardest hit.
Survey Progress and Damage Assessment
Agricultural department officials have initiated a comprehensive survey to assess the extent of damage across the affected regions. Approximately 30% of the survey work has been completed to date, with officials estimating that the remaining assessment will require another week to finish.
Pagi provided crucial insights into the pattern of damage, noting that upland areas of the paddy crop remain largely intact, while fields situated along riverbanks and in low-lying areas have borne the brunt of the destruction. The agricultural officer specifically mentioned that Cotigao, Shristhal, Loliem and Poinguinim have also experienced crop damage, though not to the same severe extent as the three primary affected zones.
Inclusive Relief Measures
In a significant reassurance to the farming community, the zonal agriculture office has committed to considering all applications for relief, even from farmers who do not possess Krishi cards. This inclusive approach aims to ensure that no affected farmer is excluded from receiving much-needed assistance during this challenging agricultural season.
The widespread damage to paddy crops has raised concerns about local food security and farmer livelihoods in the Canacona region, with authorities working diligently to complete assessments and distribute relief funds promptly.
